Patrik - I could care less how much you saved in Germany, Netherlands, Beligium. I don't know if you can save hundred, thousands or millions in those countries - BECAUSE I HAVE NOT RESEARCHED THEM. The poster is questioning 3 cities in ITALY and that is what I answered the question to. So before you go on about how "absurd" my answers are, why don't you learn to read. The question is not about buying a rail pass for ALL of Europe, but Italy. So I don't know why you took offense to it and assumed I was speaking about YOU. According to my knowledge, it is not worthwhile to get a eurail pass when you are only travelling 3 TIMES within ITALY! I love how you automatically concluded my advise on NOT getting the rail pass applies to people travelling ALL OVER EUROPE. And I love how you think YOU know everything. This is a forum - where EVERYONE has a right to post what they think, their opinions, and views about their travels and related topics. It is up to the reader to decide what he wants to do after that and whether or not he wants to get more info from other sources. I really don't appreciate the bashing on this forum when ALL I was trying to do is help someone since I too have gotten a lot of help on this site. JEEZ!

My apologies, hawaiihoneymoon. This is the quote I saw from you:
"It seems either you are comparing RAILEUOPE prices with the RAIL PASS or you don't care about saving $60. In either case, yes Rail Passes are for the lazy tourists. I ALSO SAID - IT SERVES NO PURPOSE UNLESS YOU ARE TRAVELLING WITHIN SEVERAL COUNTRIES!!!!!!"
I guess I missed the part in there where you made clear you were only talking about Italy. Where is that part again?
And I don't pretend to know everything. As I said, in MY case passes did save me money. You seem to be the one making general statements which show YOU know everything -- statements like "passes are for the lazy toursists." That is a "know-it-all" statement which is simply idiotic as far as I am concerned. I make no such general statements, but try to remind people that each case is different.
And by the way, your entire post seems to be based on an assumption that k8b was considering buying a multi-country rail pass. I saw no such indication. I would certainly assume he was considering a Eurail Pass for Italy only -- a much more logical assumption. So how could that pass be "worth it" only for travel between other countries, which it wouldn't even cover?

Thank you all for the information. I'm traveling alone and only within Italy so I'll check Trenitalia carefully before I go. I'm not on a tight schedule so I can buy the tickets in Italy since that seems to be the least expensive option. You're right - there's no substitute for doing one's own research.
