It's not a question of where you purchase, but whether there are advance purchase discounts. In Italy you can save money buy purchasing tickets in advance. Check fares at www.trenitallia.com and look for what are called the "mini" fares.

Do not use Trenitalia if you are departing from Switzerland as Trenitalia requires international tickets be printed out at their self service kiosks as a station in Italy.

There are some online discounts for advance purchase on the Swiss rail site if you are departing from Switzerland. www.sbb.ch

No. Raileurope is not the same as trenitalia.

The former is a marketing company that sells rail tickets, sometimes at substantial markup.

The latter is the Italian state RR and the definitive source for train travel in Italy.

www.sbb.ch is the Swiss RR website.
