train tickets

We plan to take trains from Budapest to Vienna and then to Prague. Should we buy the tickets here in the US or when we get there? Thanks!!

It depends - they will be cheaper there and they will be readily available IME - but you may have to wait in longish lines, etc. But some types like to have everything in hand before leaving and the higher price you'd pay thru say RailEurope may be priceless for peace of mind. You can also try the Austrian Railways web site for online purchases and possible online only discounts - ditto for Hungarian trains - i have not used these sites but think the Austrian one is user friendly. In the US raileurope.com sells these tickets - again at a mark up usually so see what they are offering versus what you'd see online. And again i'd just wait till there or better if possible book online for at least Vienna to Prague - but if you want a ticket in hand and all else fails then for any RailEurope product i always recommend the folks at www.budgeteuropetravel.com, whom i have bought railpasses from for years and can attest to their great personal service - they are a RailEurope agent i believe so same prices, better service IMO - but point is do NOT worry about getting on those trains and being able to buy a ticket once there - there may be a bit on incovenience in lines, etc but the price differential is usually worth it.

Cheers

We purchased our train ticket from Prague to Vienna the day before we wanted to leave Prague. It was cheaper than what we thought it would be if we had bought them from raileurope. When we arrived at the station in Vienna we purchased our ticket for Budapest right away before leaving the station. This was in late Sept - first part of October.

If you have time in Budapest you may want to get your ticket ahead of time. The train station in Budapest is not the best and I wouldn't wait until the last minute to buy the ticket.

Don't panic about trains! They never sell out (except in Volcanic ash situations)
Do not pay inflated Raileurope prices for point to point tickets specially in cheap countries like Hungary and Czech Republic.
You cannot generally buy tickets from a domestic rail for train originating in another country, i.e. you cannot buy tickets from Budapest to Vienna from Austrian OBB.
MAV does not sell on line, hence no special offers, just buy the ticket on the day or day before or whenereve convenient, the ticket is valid genarally for a month and for any train between the destinations. MAV has an office in centre of Budapest, so just go there....the address is on MAV website.
From Vienna to Prague, the cheapest tickets which can be bought on line from OBB start at 29 euros. But valid only for the particular day and particular train. If you don't want to be tied to that just buy it in vienna, it will be a bit more expensive. No other tips on these two roots.

Don't panic about trains! They never sell out>

this is the salient info novice tourists should realize but understandably do not - that trains may be hard to get on and thus the desire to have a booked seat ticket ahead of time. You will get on the train even on the day of the train IME of four decades of incessantly riding European trains - with very few exceptions - like some huge soccer game going on in some town, etc.
