Train Ticket Purchasing - Now or there?

We want to travel from Rome to Venice two days after Easter by train. Should I make reservations for the four of us now while in the US, or just do it while in Rome? If now, any suggestions on an effective way to accomplish this?

I would buy the ticket in Rome, at the train station (watch your wallet in the train station, our priest was pick-pocketed there this past Spring!). It's very easy to make arrangements.

Meredith: Thanks for the swift reply. With the forum site down, it has taken me a few days to get back, so your reply was down about 600 messages from top! Glad I looked. Thanks again. <BR>

The main point about buying train tickets for Italy is that they must be validated in a machine as you enter the train.Otherwise you face a hefty fine from the ticket collector.Be aware of the fact too that some Italian railway staff will never have heard the English equivalent of the Italian names so you may need to ask for a ticket to Venezia,Firenze or Roma.

Good point, Edmond. To be more specific, the machine to validate the tickets is usually at the base/end of the track in the station.
