Train Ticket Machines
 

I am considering purchasing a train ticket over the internet for my trip from Rome to Naples. However, I am leaving in a week, and do not have enough time to receive the ticket before I leave. Has anyone used the train ticket machines in Italy to pick up a pre-purchased ticket? Are they easy to use even if you do not speak or read Italian? <BR>Thanks.

Just remember, nothing is easy at the train stations in Italy. At least for me, I would not leave anything up to chance. I would want a ticket in my hand.

Just returned from Italy. We had no problems purchasing tickets at train stations. However,rail europe sent our long ride tickets by mail in two days-Venice to Nice. We were glad to have paid for seat reservations as the trains were very crowded. <BR> <BR> <BR> <BR>w

I've used the machines lots of times to purchase tickets but not to pick up a ticket. The machines are easy to use and the first screen you see on the machine is to choose your language (which includes English). There are lots of machines in Rome's termini station. You shouldn't have a problem but if you do, you can probably pick up your tickets at a ticket window. I wouldn't worry about it.

Hi Beth, <BR> <BR>We've purchased point-to-point tickets for longer distances ahead of time at Amex offices, once in Italy-getting the reserved seats which I think are essential if you don't want you (and your luggage) to be constantly moving to make way for those passengers WITH reservations. (This was 2nd class travel) <BR> <BR>But for shorter distances the automatic ticket machines are fine. They have language options -so just select that, from then on it's straight forward. (I used them at Milano Centrale which is a busy station with long queues at the ticket windows.) <BR>There's always a helpful Italian behind you in the queue who will point out what to do if you're stuck. <BR>One warning however - don't do what I did and pay for a L16,000 ticket with a L100,000 note (the only denomination I had at the time). Heads will turn as a shower of coins comes spilling into the change tray - something like hitting the jackpot at the casino!

I just did this a couple of weeks ago and it was no problem at all. I may be confused (from all the ATM transactions and other machines I had to use), but I'm almost positive that the machines have an English language option, just like the ATM's.

Rail Europe does have an option for overnight delivery for $25.00 if you choose to go that route.
