Just about half the train routes in Switzerland offer superb Apline views, in the South Eastern half of the country all of them.
Heres a selection to get you started. the first three are ordinary train services, running about hourly, the last four are tourist specials with varying frequencies.
1.From Lucerne or Zurch to Lugano, crossing the Gothard Pass.
2.From Geneva to Stresa (in Italy).
3.From Bern to Stresa.
4."The Glacier Express" actually crosses the Southern Alps from Zermatt or Brig to Chur or St.Moritz.
5."The Bernina Express" (pick of the bunch?) from Chur or St.Moritz to Tirano (in Italy)
6.The various Jungrau railways up and down the mountains from Interlaken.
If you go to www.rail.ch and click into the English language version, you can access the timetables for all of these trains.

Michele,
If you are in the area and have time, a wonderful short train ride (1 hour) goes from Chur (in the Graubunden area of Switzerland) up to the mountain resort of Arosa. It is a narrow gauge train and initially makes its way through the streets of the old city of Chur, and then winds its way up the mountain and over a long trestle bridge. It is awe-inspiring. During the summer they usually have one or two trips per day in an open-air carriage, and it is beautiful to sit out in the sunshine and feel you are a part of the Alps. We have been going there for many years, and anyone we have ever taken has fallen in love with the trip.
If you love mountain beauty, anywhere in the Alps is lovely.

In Italy, you may consider the following:

1- the main rail trunk from Brennero (coming from Innsbruck, Austria) to Trento;

2- the local track between Fortezza (on the main trunk above) to Lienz (Austria); and

3- the local track between Ponti nelle Alpi (stretching to Beluno) to Pieve di Cadore (connected to Cortina D'Ampezzo by bus).
