Train Station Help
 

We are travelling from Florence to Venice by train - which station should we arrive in?
Mestre or Venice Saint Lucia?

Then we need to get from Venice to Rome - specifially the airport.

Can anyone recommend which trains to get there? We want to leave late at night and take an overnight train since our flight leaves the next day at 10:20 from FCO.

You want to be sure and get off at Santa Lucia. Mestre is just outside of Venice.

There is a night train leaving Venice SL at 00:04 arriving Roma Tiburtina at 06:56.

The 7:06 from Rome Tib arrives at FCO at 8:03.

what train station is the airport at? I want to book the tickets online but need the name of it. Thanks.

ira has already give you the answer. The station at FCO is simply the airport station, Fiumicino Aeroporto.

You can book your ticket from Venice SL to Rome Tiburtina online, but you have to buy your ticket for the commuter train to Roma Aeroporto at the station.

Don't worry, there is a train every 15 min or so.

I don't know if this will seem silly to suggest (especially since the day after your overnight train, you're simply going to get on an airplane and sit all day) - - but an idea contributed here in the past by Ben Haines for VCE-ROM overnight is to do an "overshoot" to Trieste. The same concept work in reverse; the point is to leave at "not so late at night" amd get a more full night's sleep because the same train that departs Venice at 00:06 actually departs Trieste at 21:25. You can go from Venice Santa Lucia at 19:10 and arrive at 21:10; then you get off one train and get back on one headed the direction you actually need to go.

I have no idea if this is a worthwhile idea or not. Perhaps 10+ hrs sleeping on a train is no improvement over 6+

I don't personally have any plans to find out, but it might be info someone can use.

Thanx for the suggestion Rex. Hopefully we'll be so tired from all the traveling we'll be able to sleep the whole way home :-)

It is good of Rex to quote me, and his plan is feasible. Also, you can include dinner on the train if you travel thus. Venice Santa Lucia 2143, dining car, Portuguano 2228 to 2239, sleeper, Rome Tiburtina 0656. Or with less changing but less sleep you can go out to Venice Mestre, and leave in your sleeper there at 2318. This is the part of the train that leaves Trieste at 2125.

I think we'll take the 12:04am train out of Venice so we can stay the longest time there to tiburtina and then catch another train to the airport. thanks for the suggestions.

I would strongly suggest you check this site: www.seekitaly.com (click on 'travel alerts') about 2 weeks before your expected train trip. There has been a 24 hour train strike at least once a month in Italy over the last few months. Given how critical your journey will be, this is something to bear in mind.
