Thank you for the additional info! I did book my tockets thru bahn.com so I guess Im on. German train the whole way. This will be the first time I take a European train across country lines, so I had no idea. I think I will just res a seat so I dont have to ,ove around with my luggage.

Yes you can board always IME even if train, rarely, is full. Best to book a seat -can do on bahn.de/en I believe or in Amsterdam - like at Schiphol Airport train station's desk.

Curious as to what you paid for the tickets?

My ticket from Amsterdam Centraal to Koblenz, with a change in Duisburg, was 29,00E, plus 4,50E on the line that says reservierungen. Did I reserve a seat and not realize? Both legs of the trip have a Res. Nr. followed by XXXX XXXX XXXX XX (with actual numbers). Is this a coach number and seat assignment?

Yes I'd think that means a seat reservation- yes should have a coach number then seat number plus of course train number.

Thanks. I've done trains in France and Italy, but as I said, never across country lines or for this long of a trip. I thought this was a fair price and quickest total trip.

You should have two separate seats reserved - one for each train.

Yes there are overhead luggage racks as usual - and areas at entrances to the car. Since you are boarding in Amsterdam room should be in them - not so perhaps on the connecting train but there is always IME room in racks by entrances.

Are there frequent problems with theft on the trains? Should I bring a cable lock?

I'm not overly paranoid, but on certain train lines in Italy, it was a good idea to keep you luggage in sight at all times. On a rack near the doors was certainly not a preferred spot.

IME not frequent - have rarely heard of in Germany but yes always keep your luggage in view if stowed by doorways or use a lock if you do not hinder other folks getting to their stowed luggage.
