Train: Rome to Naples
My wife and I will be arriving at Rome airport this Saturday. Is Saturday a busy day for train travel? We need to catch the train from Rome to Naples around 2:00 to 3:00 PM and I'm not sure if I should go ahead and purchase a ticket on-line or just wait to I get there. Also, can you purchase the Rome/Naples ticket at the airport station? (I know I need to take the train from Fiumicino to Termini.)

You can buy a ticket at the airport station for a train journey to anywhere in Italy. Between Roma and Napoli, there are lots of trains, including Intercity trains where reservations are optional and hourly slow trains which are still scheduled to take under three hours. If you book in advance, you'll need to allow a margin in case your plane is late, so it might be just as quick to buy a ticket at the station and hop on the next train.

Thanks, Geoff.
It was the "margin of time" that I'd have to allow that I was concerned about. Who knows if the plane will land on time? Who knows for sure how long it will take to clear customs? etc.
I just wanted to make sure that Saturday isn't a heavily travelled train day, and, as such, it'd be tough to get tickets at the last minute.

Saturday is generally a busy day for travelling, but there are so many trains from Roma to Napoli. The worst case is that all the fast trains are booked, so you'll have to sit it out for three hours on a slow train - a good opportunity for a nap or for reading a guide book.

Hey Ira-
I 've read your now-legendary post on your trip to Italy. You had some great detail, and I relied on it quite a bit in the planning stages of our trip.
Actually, I mispoke about our arrival time. Our plane lands at 11:30 am, so we should be able to get to the Termini by about 1:30, hopefully earlier. We have a driver who will pick us up in Naples to take us to Positano. It looks like we won't get to Positano until 4:30 or 5:00. Any suggestions??
Thanks.

Jack - I think you'll have to be very lucky to get to Positano by 4:30 or 5:00. I just looked at the trenitalia.com website for trains this Saturday. If you're lucky and can get to Termini to catch the Eurostar train at 1:45 you can get to Naples by 3:40 or so. Getting out of the Naples train station and to Positano in an hour implies that there are NO mishaps along the way.
On the other hand there are later trains, so you'll get to Positano sometime on Saturday. How are you planning to get from Naples train station to Positano? Private driver?
