We just did that trip last week. You will have to purchase tickets on the Eurostar train with reserved seating. They have racks above the seats for your suitcases. It is only an hour and 25 min. ride. You can purchase the tickets at the train station in Florence when you arrive there (sooner the better) or on trenitalia.com. Enjoy your trip. The trains are great.

By the way, the weather in Florence was only about 40F and windy making it very cold. Rome was rainy and cold also but high 40's to 50 during the day. You may also want to check out this site regarding strikes that occur in Italy and may effect your travel. Check on a daily basis. We knew in advance of a metro strike before we got there and adjusted our schedule. http://www.seekitaly.com/news/from_roma.html#strikesay.

Take the Eurostar.

As far as storing your luggage....it depends on how big the luggage is. In first class,if I remember correctly, the luggage racks over the seats are big enough for a 22 inch rollaboard.

For larger suitcases, there are storage racks in a small compartment in the front of each car. You cannot view these racks from the passenger seats. So some people bring some type of locking device....to chain the suitcase to the rack...to prevent theft.

Take the Eurostar definitely. Others are local trains that make a lot of stops.

I've done it twice and it was easy and wonderful.
