Train reservations in Italy in May?

I know there have been similar questions on this board... just looking for an update! Going to Italy the end of May -- do I really need the reservations? They seem almost as expensive as the tickets themselves!

Would love some insight if I need reservations for the following legs...
* Rome to Chiusi (on a Sunday morning)
* Florence to Pisa (Friday morning)
* Pisa to Vernazza (Cinque Terre) -- Friday afternoon
* Vernazza to Rome -- Sunday morning

Thanks! Appreciate it!

I would say you don't need reservations ahead for any of these.

<<do I really need the reservations? They seem almost as expensive as the tickets themselves!>>

Are you talking about prices on www.raileurope.com - - if so this is why "we" say don't buy there. The ticket prices are over-inflated, and the "seat reservation fee" is even worse. I think you can get these seat reservations when you are THERE for next to nothing. Get them - - the tickets AND the reservations - - 24 hours ahead if it makes you feel better.

Best wishes,

Rex

Thanks for the advice. And yes, I WAS looking at raileurope.com -- with them, 2 tickets from Rome to Chiusi with reservations were well over $100 -- and this is a trip that takes just over an hour, if I recall correctly! Did seem a bit overpriced...

Hi Diane!

We traveled mid-May from Orvieto to Santa Margherita Ligure - which included a stop in Florence & a train change in Pisa. We didn't need reservations.

Since we were changing in Pisa anyway, we decided on the spur of the moment to check our luggage & catch the next connection. this gave us 3 1/2 hours in Pisa - plenty of time to walk to see the Tower & the Duomo which was really beautiful. Sounds like your plan too. It works!

Buon viaggio!
