Train Reservations for shorter areas?
 

Do I need specific reservations from Rome to Seina, Seina to Florence, Florence to Cinque Terre and Florence to Pisa?

Is a pass or booking ahead better if the rest of the time we will have car rental or taxi?

Bus is superior to train for travel between Rome/Siena, and also Siena/Florence. The bus goes "up the hill" _into_ the town of Siena; the train does not, leaving you with a major climb, or a taxi ride.

Even if this wwre not true, you would spend more money to have a pass than simply buying "ordinary" (point to point) tickets. For others contemplating more involved train itineraries than yours, see www.railsaver.com - - and always remember to click "only if it saves me money".

Hi Mom - No you don't need reservations on those routes. In fact it's not possible anyway, I believe, to make reservations on regional trains.

A pass would not save you any money for those trips.

You can purchase tickets in advance if you wish - but N.B. remember to VALIDATE them before boarding (- otherwise you will be liable to a fine).

For the routes you've listed, some trains require reservations and some don't. Point-to-point tickets will be cheaper than a pass. If you know your travel dates and times, you can buy all your tickets at once. For more flexibility, either buy tickets the day before each trip or allow ample time before boarding.

The SITA bus to Florence will leave from the same Plaza and takes you to within 3 blocks of the SMN train station.

From Florence to Pisa and to the CT, buy your rickets at the station the day before.

Rex is right on about the bus to and from Siena. There are are many daily departures to Florence. If you have time, there are busses from Siena at the same station where you would arrive from Rome and leave for Florence that will take you to the hill towns for a pittance. The bus station in Siena is just outside the wall and no more than a 15 minute walk to the campo.
