Train Questions

Hello fellow travelers,

Is it hard to get train tickets at the train station on the day of travel in the very busy travel month of August in Italy? I would love to just buy my tickets on the day of travel so I can decide that day when I want to leave. I understand from reading all the other train posts on this site that normally its very easy to buy tickets on the day of travel, but I'm a little concerned about August. Any one out there have any advice?

Traveling on high speed train from Venice-Florence and then later Florence-Rome.

Thank you!

Those routes are very popular and many, many trains make those runs each day. In addition, there's a new company that has started service to those cities called Italo, by NVT. So you have even more options. These posts, on using the kiosks on the day of purchase, and the other on the new service, Italo, may help you - Good Luck!

The Italo service will arrive and depart (once they get all routes in place) from Roma Tiburtina and Roma Ostiense stations in Rome. They will NOT be going to Roma Termini.

Why not buy them when you first GET to Italy?

Rineurope-Thank you for info and links!

Dukey1-would I be able to get tickets a few days before, even in the busy month of August? Also, I would love the flexibility of being able to decide the night before when I want to leave each city. Having never been to Italy before I really don't know what time in the day I want to leave each city. For example, get to Venice, then figure out I really need more time to explore and want to delay my departure to late afternoon. Or when I get to Florence, decide I visited all the sights I wanted to after 4 days, so decide to leave for Rome in the morning.

Thx!

Unless it is a holiday, you should have no trouble buying ticket for you route a day or two ahead.

What about buying tickets the day of travel in August? Can you just arrive at train station an hour before departure and get a ticket in August?

Probably yes, maybe no. Depends on the time of day, depends on the class of train, the class of ticket, whether or not it is August 15 or a Friday or if a large group has decided to take the train that day. There is no one true answer. If I wanted to be sure to travel from one place to another on a Tuesday. I would make up my mind by Monday night and buy a ticket then.

Thanks ellenem! I think I will take my chances and get my ticket the day before.

Thanks for your help!
