Train planes automobiles?
Hello, we are taking a trip in mid march and will land in Frankfurt. That morning we will drive to Rothenburg and spend the rest of the day trying not to pass out. We will spend most of the next day in Rothenburg as well and then plan to visit more of the romantic road that evening and next day. I have heard that the best places are from Franfurt to Rothenburg and then the area from Fussen up. Is this true? Aslo we are planning on dropping the rental car off in Munich and taking a night train to Prague. Anyone know of a night train with sleeper cabins and how I could get schedules and fares? Is 3 day enough for Romantic road? thanks...

hi, my husband and i are traveling to germany in early march. we would like to visit amsterdam and copenhagen. we have found some helpful information at the following "train" sites: bahn.de, raileurope.com. we have had a problem finding prices for the train treks we want to take and we too are wondering about sleeper cabins. i am actually trying to find out if a plane would be cheaper than a train trek from amsterdam to copenhagen. i may not have been much help for you, but if you find out any information about sleeper trains or airlines inside europe, i would appreciate an email. i will let you know if i find out any more information also. thank you in advance.

The reference library of a city near you may have the Thomas Cook European Timetyable. The night train with 1, 2 and 3 berth sleepers loads at Munich from 2300, you leave at 2337, wake for frontier checks about 0345, and reach Prague at 0834. A note on getting the best from sleepers and couchettes is at http://www.twenj.com/tipsnighttrains.htm/. The fare with a berth in a3 berth sleeping compartment is 120 euros, and in a 2-berth sleeper is 170 euros. Fares drop if you buy early: please ask less if bought earlier. Please ask
Euraide, http://www.euraide.de/. Telephone in USA 1 941-480-1555. Fax 1 941-480-1522. E-mail [email protected]
or the DER travel agency in the USA, formerly owned by German rail: http://www.der.com. E mail for information [email protected] and for sales [email protected].

Fares and supplements to Copenhagen are roughly half as much again, but again it is worth phoning an agent. The night connection is Amsterdam Central 2025, buffet car train, Duisburg 2309 to 2318, train with sleepers, Copenhagen 0959.

Please write if I can help further. Welcome to Europe

[email protected]
Frankfurt to Rothenburg and then the area from Fussen up--that is pretty much the entire Romantic Road unless you left something out of your statement. Did you mean Fussen up to some particular town? Three days are more than enough to drive the Romantic Road--it just depends on where and how often you want to stop. The places we most enjoyed when we drove the R Road last summer: Wurzburg, Weikersheim area, Rothenburg, Dinkelsbuhl, Augsburg, Wieskirche, Schwangau/Hohenschwangau. We spent 2 full days in each Hohenschwangau and the Rothenburg area. The others we visited as stops while we drove or as daytrips. So we spent about 5 days total on and around the Romantic Road.

Hello mandwt,

My wife and I spent five days between Rothenburg and Fussen (actually we included Garmisch and Mittenwald as well).

The time spent was well worth the experience and jam packed.

If you don't wither from your first day in Rothenburg after your flight, you will probably not need the next day in Rothenburg. If I have read your message correctly, that leaves two days for the balance of the RR portion of your trip. That is a little thin in my view. One full day is really needed to take in Neuschanstein Castle, Weiss Church and Linderhof Castle at the Southern end of the RR. Each is a must see.

Rufus has given you some good city choices, but you will need to be selective and prioritize what you wish to see/visit with the limited time that you are allocating.

We also took the night train that Ben has pointed out from Munich to Prague. Even though we had a 'sleeper cabin'; we did not rest well and were both bedraggled upon arrival in Prague. After a full day leading up to the train trip we could not really rest well with the noise, stops and disruption at the border etc. Of course we are not good train or plane sleepers.

Would I take the train again? Yes, but with a more casual day before the night departure.

Have a great trip.
