Train OR bus from Copenhagen to Stockholm
 

Christmas plans are being finalised. I will be spending a few days with friends in Denmark and then meeting my family in Stockholm.

I do not own a driver's license - yet!

Would the trains be running on 24 December? Are there trains or buses? Would I be better off travelling on 23 December?

While there are only two direct trains on the morning of the 24th, those are cheaper than travelling on the 23rd. So if it does not matter for you and your family whether you arrived on the 23rd or in the early afternoon of the 24th, the latter option will be better.
Most people will try to be home at least by Dec 23rd - so there will be probably fewer people travelling on the 24th.

Forgot to explain:
In Scandinavia, as well as for example in the German-speaking countries, "Christmas" is focused on on the afternoon of December 24th - making that half day the focus of all Christmas.
Preparations start in the mornings to prepare the festivities in the late afternoon, possibly put up some more decorations and have the kids jumping around the house anxiously waiting for the late afternoon (it should at least be dark) when the presents will be given. And you may or may not go to church later at night.
Dec 25th plays just a secondary role and you may or may not attend the morning church service, have a decent meal, maybe visit relatives, and that's it.
That's why most locals who are interested in celebrating Christmas will try to be home before the 24th, thus causing the most volume of travel from the weekend before Christmas until Dec 23rd.

It is more expensive to travel on the 23rd as already pointed out above, since the 24th December is the main day for Christmas, most people want to be home by then. I would recommend a seat reservation, having been on several long train journeys in Sweden, I have always been glad to have my seat assigned.

Between those two options, take the train. Flying is also an option - it is a very competitive route and prices are usually very low.

You might check in to flying and compare available flights and price with the train. I flew from Copenhagen to Stockholm a few years ago and it was quite nice. We had thought of the train and can't remember why the final decision was to fly. Time and comfort perhaps.

I loved being there in the winter, it was right after Christmas. it was lovely.
