Train or bus from Chamonix to Milan?
I need to get from Chamonix to Milan via some sort of public transportation. What are my options? Thanks for any help!

Between Chamonix and Milan there is a huge chunk of granite known as Mont Blanc. By train you can backtrack westward to either Geneva or Lyon, maybe only to Chambery, and then catch an international train to Milano. There is also a bus service from Chamoinx through the Mont Blanc Tunnel to Aosta, where you can catch a train to Milan via Torino. |

There is absolutely no need to backtrack to either Geneva OR Lyon as you can take a train from Chamonix and connect in Matrigny and travel through Brig and on to Milan.
This route will take, unfortunately as many as 6 hours to do by rail, so if you can find a faster, more direct bus route I would consider that. You can check rail schedules using the GermanRail site here: http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en |
Sorry that should read connect in Martigny

If you can get that bus service through the tunnel to Aosta that Hopscotch mentions that might be a lot faster for you.

There was a fire in the Frejus tunnel (the other tunnel between France and Italy) recently, and it has not yet reopened. Heavy traffic is expected through the Mont Blanc tunnel, so take that into account as well.

Davis - If you take the bus through the Mont Blanc tunnel, there is a DIRECT bus service between COUMAYEUR and Milan (Garibaldi bus station) at least 3 times daily.
Scheduled journey time from Courmayeur is 3.5 hours. Departures from Courmayeur are at: 06.45 10.00 17.00 There is an extra service on Fridays (dep. 13.25) and Sundays (18.00). The operator is Sadem. (Don't worry - no relation ;) ) Here's the link: http://www.sadem.it/orari_tariffe.htm Hope this helps ... Steve |
