Train Jaune in Pyrenees--worth it?

Is it worth taking the Train Jaune, or will I be able to see and do exactly the same things using my rental car? Is the train's route such that its totally away from all roads thus making it really unique, or is it just another mode of transportation to the same things? I've read that it is kind of a Disneyland toy train effect.

Both go up the same gorge.

My feeling is that unless you are a train buff you might as well drive the route, especially if you already have a rented car. That would allow you to stop along the way. But the train does look cute as it chugs along. m Check its schedule to see it alon the way.

I rode the train twice about 2 years ago to get to the village I visited. I did not have a car so I used it more for transportation than for scenic or novelty purposes. If I had a rental car I would not take the train again as it was nothing special. The highway pretty much follows the railroad as Michael said. I have ridden on much more interesting routes than this one. I am sure someone else will tell you it's the greatest thing since ice cream...... cause it was their first trip out of Hazzard County.

While you are in the area spend a couple hours visiting the medieval village of Villefranche De Conflent. I liked it so much I spent a night there at a little family owned hotel "Le Vauban Hotel". Cost about 30 euros. I wouldn't worry about a reservation.

Has anyone been on the Train Jaune in recent times? I am travelling with a 4-year old boy to the Languedoc next month and am wondering if it is worth a visit.

Thx.
