Train into Venice?
We will be flying into venice airport (vce) next fall. We would like to take a train into Venice.
Is it possible to get from the Airport to a train station easily? Which train station? Venice railroad station (Santa Lucia) or Venezia Mestre station. Any help is so appreciated! |
Why not take the Alilaguna ferry from the airport to Venice? It is more direct and only about 11€ per person. You take a shuttle (or walk 5 minutes) from the airport to the harbor and get on the ferry... which will drop you off at one of a few stops on Venice. We always get off at San Marco as it is a really central stop.
If you do the train option, you want Venice Santa Lucia. Mestre is the town on the mainland, not Venice proper |
Or you can take a bus directly to Piazzale Roma, which is almost directly across from Santa Lucia station.
ATVO express buses take 20 minutes and cost 3 Euros. ACTV local buses, take a few minutes longer and cost a bit less (included on the ACTV vaporetto pass, if you buy one). |
Or if money isn't a big issue, take a water taxi. Fast and fun.
Venice S. Lucia station is on the island--it's where you would get off the train from Mestre (Mestre is on the mainland). It's possible to take a cab or bus to the Mestre train station and then ride the rails the short distance to Santa Lucia station in historic Venice. But it's not the way most folks do it. The methods that work best for most visitors: Either water taxi (expensive) directly to your hotel (or to the docking site nearest to your hotel if it doesn't have it's own dock), or bus/cab to P. Roma on the western end of historic Venice and then walk or walk/vaporetto/walk to your hotel. Or the Alilaguna boat from the airport to historic Venice, then walk and/or vaporetto/walk to your hotel. |
I want to thank those who responded. You have helped so much. I now have a much clearer picture of what I need to do! Thanks
