Train Info for Europe
I was wondering if anyone could fill me in on a little bit of train info. Basically I was wondering if anyone could tell me which trains I would need to take for some possible side trips, if these train routes even exist, any scheduling ideas, which order would be better for hours open and scheduling, etc. etc.
England Train from London to Stonehenge Train from Stonehenge to Windsor Castle Train from Windsor Castle to London (Or vise versa) France Train from Paris to Versailles Train from Versailles to Chatres Train from Chatres to Paris (Or vise versa) Rome Train from Rome to Ostia Antica Train from Ostia Antica to Hadrian's Villa Train from Hadrian's Villa to Rome (Or vise versa) Thanks for any help you can provide. |
Go to Eurail.com or DER tours.com and email for train schedules..

jr77 - you may also try www.railpass.com and see if some sort of country combination pass will work for you. You can then follow the link to schedules (I forget what it is called but it will be on the left side of the screen). Happy travels!

Jr - There's no direct transport between Ostia Antica and Hadrian's Villa.
OSTIA ANTICA: You can reach Ostia Antica by train from Pyramide in Rome. [You can reach Pyramide by train - it's a stop on Metro Line 'B' from Roma Termini or Colosseo] HADRIAN'S VILLA: You can reach Hadrian's Villa by bus from PONTE MAMMOLO station. [Ponte Mammolo is a stop on metro Line 'A'] Hope this helps ... Steve |
Hi jr,
The best site for train schedules in Europe is http://reiseauskunft.bahn.de/bin/query.exe/en From Paris to Versailles, you take the RER line C to Versailles Rive Gauche. see http://www.chateauversailles.fr/en/5...g_us.php?idT=1 From Versailles to Chartres and Chartres to Paris see www.sncf.com For Rome to Ostia Antica and Hadrian's villa see http://www.italyheaven.co.uk/rome/ostiaantica.html See also http://www.slowtrav.com/italy/rome/bt_daytrips.htm ((I)) |
I think you need to do your own investigation. None of the Rail Europe stuff will help you much.
You need more detailed information. Go to http://www.railfaneurope.net/links.html And check each of the national rail web sites. Most of them, French, German, and Swiss have English captions. The German one and the Swiss one are good for much of western Europe. Getting to Stonehenge is not easy. You can train to Salisbury, bus to Amesbury, and walk. Or there is a tour type bus from the Salisbury station. I have done it both ways. I like the walk, more fun. Of course you might shock a native or two. The sigh of an American walking is almost a spectacle. When returning from Amesbury, I was waiting for the bus to Salisbury and this fellow with his pint sat down beside me and said, "Been out to the Stones?" I said, "Yes." He then said, "How'd ya git there?" I said "I walked." He looked at me like I was a little looney and said, "You Yanks aren't much for walking are you?" |
The bus we took from Salisbury station wasn't a "tour" in the sense that a) there was any commentary, or b) we had to stay with it. It was the Wilts & Dorset Service 3 Bus.
<b>http://www.wdbus.co.uk/htm/ttNorthern/002-3.pdf</b> We took our time and returned on the next bus departing Stonehenge. |
