train info and weather info in Germany

Hi, What would be the cheapest way to get from Munich to Salzburg by train at the end of this month? I don't think that you could use the Bayern tickets since your going into another country and I think that they are only good for Germany. Also, what would be better to do--- take a train from Nuremberg to Rothenburg or to rent a car for the day? How long does it take to get to Rothenburg on the local trains? Is it complicated to switch trains like you only have 3 minutes to jump from track 2 to track 15? What are the chances that there will be snow on the ground in Munich, Salzburg, Nuremberg around the end of November thru the first week of December? I have really bad feet and I don't have boots and I don't have time to buy some and break them in. Thanks again for your help. Everyone on this forum makes my traveling smoother.

Hi!

This is not a direct answer to your question, but friends and I just travelled to Munich and then to Geneva and we just bought a Bayern ticket (not sure of spelling) to the border of Germany and then caught an Austria train to Geneva.

Considering Salzburg is right at the boarder, maybe you can use ur Bayern ticket right up to the boarder and catch a connecting bus or train? not really sure of the details though. sorry

Salzburg is considered also a German train station and thus the Bayern Ticket can be used to go to Salzburg.

There is a German (DB) train station in the Salzburg train station

Be careful, there might be strikes on the train system. If you think about renting a car anyway you might be on the safer side if you do not count on the bahn.

Hi, Thanks for everyone's advice and information. What is this about a possible rail strike? I haven't heard anything about this.If we rent a car what is the best way to do this? Do it before we leave or when we are there. How hard would it be to rent a car there if we took the trains and then they went on strike and THEN we rented a car. We are going Nov. 28 thru Dec. 7. We are flying into Munich and then possibly a day trip to Salzburg, going to Nurenburg with a possible side trip to Rothenburg. Thanks again. Also, what is the possibility of snow at this time in these areas?

Strikes have been announced today for 15 and 16 November. Nobody knows whether they reach an agreement by end of November. So watch the news. I have written here in this forum about today's announcement, but it seems as if nobody reads such threads.

Make a guess, tens of thousands of people want the same thing as you at the same time. What are your chances ;-).

Right now, now snow in Munich and further north in Bavaria. Havy snowfalls in the mountains last week. It's rather cold for the season. You can expect lows down to -10C (14F) during the next few days. Snowfall forecast for tomorrow. Looking at the thermometer on my balcony right now, it's 3 degrees celsius.

Thanks everyone for your information.Traveller 1959 I did see your post about the strike but not before I posted this one. Keep us informed please it really does help and we appriciate it. Also, I didn't think it was going to be that COLD there. I'm going to have to rethink my packing. I wanted to try to travel as light as possible. Oh Well. I am a person who is ALWAYS cold so I'll just have to drink more Schnapps. How much snow in Munich have you gotten? Thanks again.

>How much snow in Munich
Up to now only some sleet in the morning, but it melted within a few hours. No snow at all in the city right now.
