TRAIN INFO

We are taking a train from Switz. to Venice. Out trip ends in Lucerne. The rest of the tour is flying home via Zuric. Wold we be better off taking a train from Lucerne to Venice or from Zurich to Venice? We would like a first class train with as little stops as possible. Any suggestions. Appreciate help.

Thanks,

Audrey

From Luzern, you may take either the 8:23am or the 10:23am train. There's a change in Milano. The arrival times in Venice are, respsctively, 3:57pm and 5:57pm.
From Zurich, you may take the 9:07am direct train, arriving in Venice at 4:57pm.

Appart the need of train change when travelling from Luzern, There's not much difference. All options stop at the same cities in Switzerland and Italy. The options from Luzern take some 16 minutes less.

Paulo

Go from Lucerne if it's more convenient. You'll probably stop in Milan, whether you travel from Lucerne or Zurich. The time will be about 7 hours either way. Just go to "www.fs-on-line.com" to search for schedules. Use the spelling for the cities of Venezia, Luzern and Zurich to search on the site.

Good morning,, Jayne
One alternate tho not cheap is by going
from Zurich to Venice by air. The flite
is about one hour, sure beats the time
you will spend on the train... We have
done this and in slightly different
versions such as a stop over in Lugano
a number of times in the past..
Departing Xurich at 0840 will put you
at Marco Polo at 0945 Well in time to
get to your hotel and then have lunch..
Richard of LaGrange Park, Il..

The quickest run from Zürich to Venice is 6 hours and 36 minutes with a change in Milan. The train leaves Zürich at 13:07 and gets into Milan at 16:45. The train to Venice leaves at 17:05 and arrives in Venice at 19:43.

There is an earlier train from Zurich that leaves at 7:04 and takes 6 hours and 41 minutes, with one change.
A no change train leaves Zurich at 9:07 but it requires 7 hours and 38 minutes for the trip because it takes an 18 minute break in Chisaso, followed by a 30 minute break in Milan
From Luzern, the times are about the same. One train leaves at 7:18 and arrive in Venice at 13:45 for a travel time of 6 hours and 27 minutes.
The quickest travel time I saw was from Luzern at 6 hours and 25 minutes.
You leave Luzern at 13:18 and arrive in Venice at 19:43. One change, in Milan, is involved.
Based on these figures, I don't see much of a difference.
Why not check the times yourself??
The information is readily available on the web. The Swiss Bundesbahn has an excellent web site at www.sbb.ch
One version is in English; others are in German, French, and Italian.

Check the German rail site at http://bahn.hafas.de for good information on schedules, stops, amenities on train, etc. You might check the difference between 1st and 2nd class in price as there is little difference in comfort. The 1st class compartment seats are more padded, but 2nd class is fine.
