train from Vienna to Milan

I would like to take an overnight train from Vienna to Milan. I have never been to Europe before and do not know how the train system works. Should I buy a ticket before I travel to Europe? Where can i find the schedules and fares? Thanks.

2005ems,

You can go to the Swiss National Railway Website (SBB.ch) and check out timetables for all over Europe. You should buy your tickets in Europe. Trains are easy. Have a good trip.

The Rick Steves site has good train info, esp. for beginners. It's not just about Railpasses:

Personally, I prefer having tickets in hand before leaving the states-- just not to have to deal with the detail while I'm in Europe. Try www.euraide.com, or Budget Europe at 800 441 2387 or 800 441 9413. Both those resources charge the same as the ticket face value plus a small handling and shipping fee. They both understand the fares and are a great help.
