Train from Venice to Lucerne
 

I need to travel from Venice to Lucerne (mid aug)and I was wondering what is the cheapest way to travel train or plane? I am assuming train will be but how do i go around finding out approx prices for travel and do i need to book in advance?can i just go to the station a few days before I want to travel and buy a ticket then? do the trains keave daily?

aThere are several trains every day. You can use the Swiss rail site www.rail.ch (in English) to see the schedules. I find it much easier than the Italian one (Trenitalia), but it won't show you the price unless you go to "click and Rail" and choose Italy. Then it will show special prices for the next seven days. A ticket from Venice to Zürich is 47 euro through Click & Rail---this is on the 10:51 train from Venice to Zurich with no changes. You could get off at Arth Goldau and connect there with a train to Luzern. Or you could take a train directly to Luzern by going Venice-Milan-Luzern, but there is no Click & Rai price for that. Perhpas the Trenitalia site will give you the price for that route.

And yes, you can just go to the station a few days in advance and buy your ticket.

We've taken the 6 hour train ride from Lucerne to Venice & back through Arth Goldau. We had to change train in Milan. The Milan-Arth Goldau is the nice Cisalpino train, but the Milan-Venice train is the worst part. Make sure you have a seat reservation for that part. Some Italians sat & smoked on our reserved non smoking seat when we boarded the train. We had to argue to get them off our compartment. The compartment seat is quite uncomfortable for the 3 hour ride.It was a full train where people were standing wall to wall on the hallway.

DAX---that is why we travel 1st class in Italy, but 2d class in Switzerland.

Fortunately, all Swiss trains are all non-smoking now. I'm not sure how that works with a train that starts out in Italy.

A slight variation on the above train plans worth considering might be the train to Flulen and the ferry to Luzern...it's a beautiful ride!
