Train from Turin, Italy to Switzerland
 

I will be traveling in September this year from Turin Italy through Switzerland to Stuttgart Germany. would like to know of recommended stops/cities in Switzerland to visit on my way to Stuttgart. I would have 6 days to make stops so was wondering if 2 day stops in Como, Lucerne or Zurich would be good suggestions via train.

I'd forget Como and Zurich but keep Luzern and add in a stop in the Berner Oberland for several days

Day 1:
Turin dp 8.28 - Aosta 10.29/11.00 - Martigny 12.55/13.19 - Montreux ar 13.52, luggage into the lockers, visit of Chillon castle, Montreux dp 17.44 by Golden Pass Panoramic Express to Montbovon and then to Gruyeres ar 19.00. Sleep in the medieval city of Gruyeres.

Day 2: Visit of the cheese diary, the castle and may be a museum of Gruyeres, local train to Broc chocolate factory, back to Gruyeres and Montbovon and Golden Pass Panoramic Express to Interlaken. Sleep at Interlaken or Wengen.

Day 3:
Visit the Jungfrau area

Day 4:
Late afternoon train to Lucerne

Day 5:
lucerne

Day 6:
Lucerne - Stgt, may be with a stopover at Schaffhausen/Rhine Falls, followed by a Rhine river boat ride to Stein am Rhein - Constance and direct train to Stuttgart from there.

Luzern..great place but you can also do a half-day train trip to Engleberg and the ascent of Mt. Titlis. Spectacular views and great "Swiss sterotypical" scenery along the way.

I think the Berner Oberland and especially the Jungfrau Region to many is the absolute highlight of Switzerland - the dreamy glacier-girdled peaks soaring high above lush meadows - toylike trains and thrilling aerial gondolas going everywhere - hiking paths for all degrees of difficulties - and about half way to Stuttgart

Interlaken is the rail hub - from Italy you have to go thru Milan and Domodossola to Brig/Visp and onto Spiez - change there to a sideline to Interlaken and then trains into the mountains - folks all rave about staying in a mountain town like Grindelwald, Lauterbrunnen, Wengen or Murren - all of whose hotels have dynamite views of the high Alps -

then when ready to go to Stuttgart simply take the train to Zurich and hook up with German ICE trains directly to Stuttgart. If traveling from one border point to another border point and spending a few days traveling around then check out the Swiss Pass or Half-Fare Card, etc - great sources for stuff about Swiss trains check out these superb sites - www.swisstravelsystem.com; www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

Look into the Ticino, both - Lake Lugano and Lago Maggiore regions are wonderful. And don't forget Ticino's capital, Bellinzona, the magical Verzasca and Maggia Valleys.

From Bellinzona, you could take the Wilhelm Tell Express to Lucerne, a combination trip on train and lake steamer:

Locarno and Lucerne would be easy stops along the way to Zurich, where you could take the ICE train to Stuttgart.

Well Locarno and Lugano are nice cities but if dreamy of Alpine Switzerland they will not fulfill your dream - only in a place like the Jungfrau Region (or Zermatt, Gstaad, etc) will that dreamy picture be realized. But if that is not your dream then either Locarno or Lugano would be sweet stops - each on a lovely lake. Lugano is a bigger city.

....and neither Locarno nor Lugano are along the itinerary from Turin to the Bernese Oberland.

Yes from Locarno you can take the sweet Centovalli (100 valleys) scenic train to Domodossola in a few hours and then be in bring in a few minutes - no not the direct route but if they have a few days a nice one! Even though this line goes thru Italy much of its course a Swiss Pass would be fully valid and also from Domodossola to Brig and Zermatt or Grindewald, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen, Murren, tec.

No problem, Dukey; everything is possible.

Turin - Aosta - Spiez (Bernese Oberland): 6 hrs
Turin - High speed train - Milan - Spiez (Bernese Oberland): 4 to 6 hrs
Turin - Lake Orta - Spiez (Bernese Oberland): 4 3/4 hrs to 6 hrs
Turin - High speed train - Milan - Lugano - Spiez (Bernese Oberland): 7 1/2 to 8 hrs
Turin - TGV - Chambery - Spiez (Bernese Oberland): 8 1/4 hrs

Spiez is yeh part of the Berner Oberland - but add at least another hour onto the train travel if going to stay up in the hills like Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen or 1.5-2 hours for more remote Murren and Wengen.
