Train From Siena to Deruta area?

Need advice for travel by train from San Gimignano area to Deruta area. Is there a route in that direction-if so, is it worth it to go first class? Thanks so much for all of your info on past questions!

Traveling train from Poggibonsi (i.e. the station nearest San Gimignano) to Deruta is theoretically possible -- but so much circuitous as to be impractical. To travel from Poggibonsi to Perugia you would have to backtrack via Florence (check schedules on www.trenitalia.com). Once in Perugia, you can hop on a regional rail line (not operated by Trenitalia) - schedules on www.fcu.it. In any case, forget about 1st class - these are all local lines -- you'd call them commuter trains in the US.
As an alternative, there are three buses a day from Siena to Perugia (www.senabus.it).

Fuhgeddaboudit.

Taking the train should rank just below "crawling," "somersaulting," and "unicycling" your way from Siena to Deruta. Yes, they'll get you there evenutally, but not necessarily in the most productive or expeditious manner. To take a train from Siena requires first going to Florence or Chiusi, then to Perugia (potentially with another change of trains in Terontola), then a change of train station to an altogether different train line, then finally taking a schlep train into Deruta.

Plan "A" should be to rent a car and drive to Deruta, with Plan "B" being to take a bus.

Ooops....I read your subject line which said "Siena" and completely ignored that you were trying to get from San Gim. The routing doesn't change, although you would have to take an additional train from Poggibonsi to Siena before going on to Chiusi.

Hi S,

You might want to consider renting a car. It's about a 2-hr drive.

There are buses from San Gim to Siena, Siena to Perugia and a train from Perugia to Deruta.

See
http://www.sangimignano.net/bus/
http://www.senabus.it/

"Arrive at the railway station of S.Anna in Perugia (bus every 10 minutes).
This station is run by the Regional Railway Public Transport Services (FCU) and is in the centre near the bus station.
Take the FCU train for Terni and get off at Deruta."

Hope this helps.

Hi Ira,
Actually, my husband and I will be driving from San Gimagnano to Deruta. The train question is for my brother, who will be biking the area, but didn't want to go that distance by bike.
What route would you suggest for driving to Deruta from San. G.? Thanks for all of your input!

I am afraid you will have to train from Rome to Poggibonsi (with at least 1 change) - and then by bus to San G.

Look at the websites given by Ira if it will not be better to travel by bus.
