train from Rome to Venice with stop in Florence
We are traveling by train (Eurostar) from Rome to Venice and we would like to stop for a few hours in Florence.
The price of a single 2nd class ticket Rome -> venice is 51 Euros. The combined price of two separate Rome->Florence, Florence->venice tickets is 66 Euros. Can we just buy Rome -> Venice tickets and get off and back on in Florence? I suppose that by doing that we will not have seats assigned but is it possible? Thanks. |
No, you cannot.
Seat reservations are mandatory on all ES trains so tickets are train specific. You should select the "Amica" fare, not the standard fare. That will save you 20%. Your total for the 2 legs will be 50.40 Euros instead of the standard 63 Euros |
If you were traveling by IC train you could get off for (I think) 6 hours and then get on another IC train. However IC trains make more stops, so the trip would take longer and you would not be guaranteed a seat. You might find a seat, or you might end up standing in the hall. You could purchase reserved seats on one or both of your IC train choices for an additional fee, but by then you ticket prices might be approaching ES train 2nd class rates.
As J62 said, for an ES train you MUST have a ticket for that particular train since all ES tickets come with assigned seats. |
Thanks J62 and ellenem, fodorites rule!

Hi E,
The left luggage office is to your right as you face the trains. ((I)) |
Actually, I do have two more questions (probably already asked many times): will I be fine just going to Roma Termini and buy tickets for the next ES to Florence (and then buy the tickets for Venice once in Florence), or do I have to reserve the tickets in advance?
And if I do have to reserve in advance, can I then change them for an earlier train at the station? (the reason I'm asking this is because I'd like to leave Rome as early as I can but I can't plan the exact time right now.) |
hi, eric,
I believe that you can buy your tickets from any travel agent selling trenitalia tickets. regards, ann |
Yes, you can buy just before you board as long as there are seats available.
