Train from Rome to Sorrento
 

I am arriving in Rome at 11.30am on Sunday 2nd April, can I get to Sorrento by that evening by train and which train do I catch?

I would say so. It takes about 2 hour by fast train to reach Naples. You will most likely have to change trains in Napoli to get to Sorrento...but google the Italian train schedule and you can see the schedule yourself....http://www.italiarail.com/tickets/IR/IR.asp?AFF=TRE

Are you arriving at the airport? If so, you will have to take the train(Leonardo Express about 10Euro) from the airport into Rome's Termini station and then catch a train(ES 2nd cl about 22E) to Naples. In Naples you change to the local commuter train, Circumvesuviana(about 3E).

I was warned that the Circumvesuviana is a nightmare and took the train that bypasses the Amalfi coast for Salerno. From there I took a bus (ferry is another option) to Amalfi. (They go to Sorrento as well.)

Those who have actually taken the Circumvesuviana can say whether it is truly that bad. Anyway, my route worked well for me.

Edgie, We took the Naples to Sorrento train route in November. We used the excellent directions by Walter (paradiselost) which you can find with a search here.

One of the things that made catching the circumvesuviana train from Napoli Centrale less than comfortable is that it seems most locals catch this train from the stop just before the Naples train station so it was already full when we got on.

We had to stand for about 25 minutes before a seat was available. This was a weekday afternoon so we were probably at the beginning of "rush hour" travel or the close of school because there were lots of teens on the train.

We arrived at Fiumicino at about 11 am and caught the 12:45 eurostar from Rome Termini and were in Sorrento by about 4-4:30.

Keeping luggage to a minimum made the train travel so much easier ;;)

I have never had a problem with the Circumvesuviana. If I remember correctly, the bus from Salerno to Sorrento is a trip of nearly 3 hours (but that may just be via the scenic route).

I was warned about using the Circumvesuviana late at night, as one might be vunerable in a mostly empty train with "gangs" able to hop on, rob passengers, and hop of quickly.

I often wondered if it would be possible to get of the main railway at Nocera, and then somehow get to the Circumvesuviana station.
