Train from Rome to Pompeii

Many years ago we took a train from Rome Termini Station to Pompeii Scavi Station. Would someone be so kind as to review this for me. I know we changed to a Circumvesuviana train in Naples. I had written down exactly what station to get off at in Naples and exactly how to walk to the Circumv. train and that we got off at the Scavi Station in Pompeii and we were perfectly there without fretting.

Also do we buy the tickets for both trains at the Termini Station in Rome or do we need to buy the Circumv. tickets at the Naples station?

Thank you in advance for any and all help. I want to have this completely planned before we get to Rome the latter part of Feb.

Napoli Centrale or Napoli Garibaldi, stations that abut each other and both have passageways linking them to the Circumvesuviana station. You can also take a train directly to Pompeii from Naples - but the main Pompeii station is about a mile away from the Pompeii Scavi station right at the entrance to the archeological site. Most trains from Rome arrive at the Pompeii Centrale station.

Oh I believe you must buy ticket for Circumvesuviana train at the Circumvesuivana station - carry some coins to use in machines rather than a potential wait in line - it costs only about 3 euros or so all told for this portion that is not a part of Trenitalia, the Italian State Railways so thru ticketing may not be possible (I do not know for sure so ask in Rome).

Oh and go to www.trenitalia.com to snatch up some nice discounted tickets if you act in advance and wish to commit yourself to a specific Rome-Naples train - can save some money and time of having to buy a ticket once in Rome this way.

Since your last visit the station complex in Naples has had a considerable makeover, and you may very well not recognise the place!

Hopefully, you'll find this useful if changing of trains there:

It's been tested by many many people now, and has worked for almost all of them - although there was one who complained of an escalator out of action, however that's definitely been fixed again since!

Thanks for all the relies. A Brit in Ischia....how can you make it any simpler than this. Love it, this is wonderful. I already have the maps printed.

www.vesuviana.it

Enter your date/departure station/arrival station (if the ruins, you want Pompeii Scavi). Probably about 30 minutes, but depends on train as some make more stops than others.
