Two routes - one direct along the coast like bob above says - and trains every few hours after that - via Pisa and La Spezia, where usually you have to change to local trains that stop in each of the Cinque Terre villages - other route may be faster but cost more and requires usually 2-3 changes - high-speed route via Florence - change to regional train to Pisa and then regional or IC train to La Spezia, change to local train to Manorla.
Coastal route is usually cheaper and more scenic as it does ply along the coast at points.
Check out these great sites for lots of great info on Italian and European trains - www.ricksteves.com; www.seat61.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com - www.trenitalia.com for schedules and online discount tickets that however in practice are non-changeable nor refundable and must be booked way in advance to guarantee as they are sold in limited numbers. And IMO on the trip of a lifetime go first class on a 4-5 hour trip - much much more relaxed in many ways - bigger seats, more empty seats - more room for luggage - all in all a significantly more relaxed 4-5 hours. 2nd class ain't a cattle car but first class is IMO of years of riding Italian trains well worth the extra money for the average traveler on the trip of a lifetime. |
