train from Rome to Civitavecchia
 

After much searching I think I found a train from Rome to Civitavecchia. Does anyone know the price? It was not listed because (Ithink) I cannot make reservations. Is it possible that once I get there I could go to a travel agency or the actual termini to get tickets. We must meet a cruise ship so we cannot be late. There are 4 of us- 2 adults/2children. Thanks in advance for your help! Kim

My husband and I had this same dilemma last summer. We actually ended up hiring a driver that picked us up at the airport and dropped us off at the cruise terminal. This same driver picked us up after the cruise and dropped us at our hotel in Rome. It was our honeymoon and we wanted something easy. It was about 60 Euros each way, but worth it so sit in a comfy, air-conditioned Mercedes after 16 hours of flying!

You haven't indicated what day you want to travel and what time of the day. Assuming it will be in the late spring/early summer, I put in the random date of May 25 at 8:00 am on the trenitalia.com website.

There are numerous daily trains leaving Roma's Termini station approximately every 30 minutes for Civitavecchia, with the first departure at 8:08 am, arriving at 9:15 am (1h 7mins). Total cost for 2 adults and 2 children, traveling 2nd class is 12,40 euros. There are subsequent trains departing at 8:38am (arr 9:54am), 9:08am (arr 10:15am), 9:38am (arr 10:54am), 9:46am (arr 10:32am - a IC Plus train only 46 mins), 10:08am (arr 11:15am), 10:38am (arr 11:54am), etc.

I take trains all the time in Italy and they are very convenient. You can buy your train tickets in the front area of the Termini station at the ticket (biglietto) office or, if there are lines, from the automated ticket machines for faster service. The machines take all credit cards (V, MC, AMEX, etc) and the printed tickets are ready in less than 5 minutes. There is no need to get these tickets from a travel agency.

Where did you find a rate of 60 Euros?? I have been pricing drivers from Rome to Civitavecchia and haven't found anything less than $120.

We land at fiumicino in rome on July 4 and leave for the port on July 6. We are trying to figure the least expensive way for 4 people to get to the port. I was quoted $228 for a private car. Wow! But if the train is going to cost about that we will go with the car. Help!

Huitres wrote that the train for 4 people is 12.40 E. A lot less than a car!

The train to Civitavecchia will be a LOT less than any car rental. The trip takes about an hour and you cane leave from Termini or San Pietro.

For four people and with luggage for a cruise I suggest you plan on taking one of the taxis which will meet the train arrival in Civitavecchia. It is only a ten-minute walk to the port <b>entrance</b> but your ship will undoubtedly be docked farther from there.

You can easily buy these tickets <b>after</b> you get to Italy and you absolutely will <b>not</b> need seat reservations if you take one of the regional services.

We took that train from Rome to Civitavecchia last October. The cost was about three or four euros each and took about one hour. When we got to Civitavecchia we walked to the port entrance and our cruise line, Celebrity, provided free bus service to the ship. The walk from the train to the bus was only about 15 minutes. Have fun.

hi ashleylogan: Take the train! It's only 12,40 euros total for all 4 of you and is only 1 hour away. You will be there before you know it. Paying over $200 for a rental car, trying to arrange pick-up in Rome and drop-off in Civitavecchia of the vehicle to travel only 1 hour outside of Rome just doesn't add up to the convenience and money you will save going there via train.

I checked again with your specific date of July 6 and the fare for 2nd class travel with 2 adults/2 children is still 12,40 euros TOTAL.

Ask your cruise ship if they provide free bus service pick-up upon arrival at the train station in Civitavecchia to the port, as the other poster indicated. Otherwise, a taxi ride for a few minutes is certainly not going to cost much; and walking is always free! :)

Thanks so much! That is totally unbelievable that it costs only 12.4E. We will definately take the train. We can find better ways to spend our money. I suppose we should take the train to our hotel from the airport when we arrive too. Does the train run all hours? Since the cruise line is arranging our airfare we have no idea when we'll be there until about one month before we leave i'm told. Thanks! Kim

There is an express train from the airport to the Termini. Then taxi or metro to your hotel. I don't think you'd be saving much for 4 people. The train is &euro;9,50 per person. There is also a metro train for &euro;5 each. Here's the link for timetables etc. - http://www.adr.it/content.asp?Subc=1...&amp;idMen=731. My suggestion is to take a taxi from the airport direct to your hotel, particularly after a long haul flight. I couldn't see a taxi costing more than &euro;50.
