Train from Rome airport to Sorrento?
 

I'm posting for a friend who wants to get to Sorrento as quickly and conveniently as possible from the Rome airport. Any need to stop in Rome and/or Naples? Any help you can give this first time European traveler would be appreciated!

S/he'll have to stop in both. The Leonardo Express from the airport goes to Roma Termini, where the trains to Naples leave. Sorrento is served by a commuter line, the Circumvesuviana, which leaves from a station connected to the one where the train from Rome arrives. A private transfer from Naples to Sorrento is also possible; there are many transfer services Naples-Sorrento recommended here if you do a search.

Has your friend checked bus routes? That might take less time.

Googling "How to get to Sorrento from Rome airport" brought up below. Didn't pay attention to the age of the post so you'll need to do some followup.

I haven't looked at TDudette's link, but I don't think the bus is an option. They leave at 7:00 am (too early if arriving the same day in Rome) or in the afternoon at 2:00 pm and 3:00 pm. The bus lines are Marozzi and Curreri.

Thanks for the replies. Are the trains from Rome and Naples pretty frequent? Will there be any problem buying the tickets the same day? Can the tickets all be purchased in the airport or do they have to be purchased in each terminal separately?

The Leonardo Expess goes every 30 minutes. Rome-Naples trains are frequent, and tickets for the express and to Naples can be purchased at the airport. Trains almost never sell out, and seat reservations are included in the ticket for the fast ES and ES AV trains.

Tickets for the Circumvesuviana have to be bought separately in Naples.

Look at trenitalia.com for roma termini to napoli. Looks like lots of trips but knowing date would be necessary. Weekend schedules differ from week days.

And from Naples, s/he would need to get to Sorrento by, as mentioned above, either bus, driver, ferry or Circumvesuviana.

2 o'clock bus to Sorrento from CDG might take same amount of time as train. Do you know anything about friend's arrival time/day?

I'd think 4 hours would mean you made good time with brief connections.
FCO to Roma Termini is about 30 minutes
Roma Termini to Naples is about 2 hours
Naples to Sorrento is about an hour

to be a little more specific about the Circumvesuviana. Napoli Centrale and Garibaldi are the same station; one upstairs the other down. So on the return trip look to see if the train leaves where you think it leaves. Actually the return train from Naples to Rome leaves downstairs and to your left.

When you get to the station in Naples, look to the left at some point and you will see Circumvesuviana, follow the signs, go to ticket window and purchase tickets. Then continue down to left. The commuter train leaves on the right side headed for Sorrento. Now, there are two different trains, one is the express (I use this time with some degree of levity) and the other actually does not go all the way to Sorrento. Look for the sign on the train (on the front).

If you get the train to Pompeii and Ercolano you have it made. Somewhere around 45 minutes or so.

I have been on this train several times and have had no issues, but everyone will tell you to hang on to your "stuff."

The stazione in Sorrento is about 50 yards from the main street. There are buses and taxis in abundance. If you walk to the street and turn left, go about 2 or 3 equivalent blocks and you will be in the main piazza (almost said pizza). Wish I were going along; Sorrento is breathtaking.

If we would like to stay a night in Naples can you please recommend any B&B that near to station or town whichever easy for us to travel via public transport to the attraction place.
Understand there are few more best attraction near by like Positana,Pompeii,Herculaneum.Amalfi and Napoli,would appreciate you can advice which is the 1st stop if we would like to visit all these places in 3days/2nights,is it sufficient?

After visiting to Sorrento we would like to travel to Florance, can you please advice how we can travel via public transport and please recommend place to stay at B&B which nearby easy access of public transport or attraction.

What is your budget? Do you want to stay in Sorrento or Naples?

two trains an hour Rome to Naples and these are mainly high-speed trains going nearly 200 mph so would be the quickest way - you do have to change trains in Naples and take CircumVesuviana train to Sorrento - an easy transfer but a few-minute walk thru tunnels - Circum Vesuviana trains go 2-3 times an hour - i think you may not be able to buy a Rome Airport to Sorrento ticket all in one as the CircumVesuviana trains are not part of the Trenitalia state railway network - but it is easy to buy the 3 euro or so Naples - Sorrento fare at the station. Otherwise at Rome's Airport train station you should be able to buy a thru ticket to Naples Centrale, included in the fare will be the mandatory seat reservations. And yes i agree highly unlikely for all of the two trains an hour to be full - worst would be they'd have to go first class, which IMO is well worth the money for any first-time European traveler - more room for luggage, larger seats, etc. Caution them on the Naples to Sorrento train to keep an eye on their belongings as thefts have been reported on these trains.
