Train from Paris to Lyon
I will be visiting friends in Paris and Lyon in March, 2017. I booked a non-stop flight out of Newark at a fabulous fare, but flying into Orly. Lyon is the first segment of the trip. However, I am having difficulty with the TVG schedule to Lyon from Gare de Lyon. Rail Europe generates the trip from Bercy. There are only 3 trains, with a 5.5 hour journey. Am I endeavoring the tickets too far in advance, or is the TGV schedule not available during March?
Merci Beaucoup for advice. |
While you cannot buy tickets this early, your current issue is neither being too far in the future nor TGV schedule not available. it is one of the many shortcomings of using raileurope site.
You can get a schedule at the web site of the TGV train operator, www.voyages-sncf.com. When it comes to actually buy tickets, https://www.trainline.eu/ is much easier to use especially those from the U.S. However, the latter site is a minimalist site, so for research purpose, voyages-sncf gives more info. For general what-ifs with schedule, www.bahn.com is much easier to use, but no price info. |
Do NOT use RailEurope--the tickets are considerably more expensive than booking with the SNCF web site or Captaine or bahn.de.
We took the TGV from the Gare de Lyon to Avignon; it's only around 2-1/2 hours. You could, however, take the TGV right from the airport. |
take the TGV right from the airport
Orly or CDG? |
Bercy is an annex to the Gare de Lyon, one metro stop to the east of it. Google "gare de Bercy" and then click on "maps"
|
Go to Gare de Lyon.
Take a tgv from Paris Gare de Lyon to Lyon. |
http://en.voyages-sncf.com/en/ will put you directly on the SNCF site in English. Facing competition, it has become much more user-friendly. The dreaded bump to RailEurope is now easy to avoid.
All of the sites below will help you commute from Orly to Gare de Lyon: http://www.parisaeroport.fr/en/passe...blic-transport http://www.ratp.fr/en/ratp/c_21879/visiting-paris/ www.googlemaps.com www.parisbytrain.com |
Just for my info. I hardly ever change the language when I book a train. So I booked in English French German Italian. What is so complicated to read a schedule in foreign language and prices ?
Not being arrogant here - just curious : if not in English you people don't cope ? |
Merci beaucoup to everyone who so kindly provided such valuable information.
Michael....we are flying into Orly. Again....much appreciation to all of you for sharing your info. |
we are flying into Orly.
I knew that, but I am not sure that the person suggesting that you take the TGV from the airport knew that. |
If you do not feel like going into Paris because you will be there later in your trip, you could consider going to Gare de Massy and taking a TGV from there to Lyon. The trip takes about 2 hours if you get a direct train. You could look at the departure schedules and decide based your scheduled arrival time.
