We'll (family of 4)be travelling to Paris this summer then on to Venice,Florence,Naples and Rome.
We've been looking at dif. options and finally opted for a 4 day railpasses France-Italy. I've been reading posted messages that point to point tickets in Italy are cheaper than buying a pass but when I looked at Paris to Venice overnite train $800 for 4 people + rest of ptp tickets for Italy route we opted for the pass. 4 passes with eurorailways will cost us $982. Btw we're not bothering with Paris to Venice flight cause of luggage issue. Pls tell me if this is the best choice for our trip

The overnight trains from Paris to Italy have special inclusive fares, depending on the type of sleeping accommodation (there are no ordinary seats). If you have a rail pass covering France and Italy, there are discounted fares, but the trip is not free.
The overnight train is a very civilised way of getting between Paris and Venezia, maximising your time in each city, and taking you directly to Santa Lucia station right by the Grand Canal.

You will still have to purchase sleeping accomodations on the Paris/Venice train.

If you go to Italy first, you can get reduced "Smart Fares" (60 E pp in a C4) for Venice to Paris at www.trenitalia.com

We took the overnight at Christmas time from Paris to Rome, family of 4, and I think it was around $500 or $600. There's a thread here about booking train travel on SNCF and I followed those instructions. I did notice that tickets were more the next day and less the previous day so if you're flexible check out different days. But $800 sounds a little high so you may want to check again.

thank you all for your responses. We've booked all our hotels except for Rome. Can anyone recommend a hotel centrally located with quadruple room for 200euro
