Train from Paris to Brive
 

For those who have ridden the train from Paris to Brive, is there much difference in 1st and 2nd class? I am looking at PREM tickets for 17€ for 2nd class versus 30€ for lst class. The train is a Corail Teoz. When I buy the ticket, does this automatically make the reservation? Or do I have to do this separately? It appears that I can select seats side by side, two together. (rather than three across) I would appreciate any other information. Thanks!

I can't believe you're taking a Corail from Paris to Brive. Corail is a local train. The main trains from Paris to Brive are TGVs. I don't even think Corails have more than one class. The one from Bordeaux to Périgueux sure doesn't.

If you're talking about the TGV, IMO, the difference in price between 1st and 2nd class isn't worth it at all. It's a relatively short ride (3 hours or so), and all you get is a bit more space and a bit more privacy.

StCirq - according to the SCNF website, all trains from Paris to Brive are Corails. The TGV goes to Bordeaux and on to Perigueux. The trip from Paris to Brive takes about four hours. The Corails do have two classes. I thought the 2nd class would probably be fine, but thought I would ask since the PREM fares are pretty good. Thanks!

Corail trains are the express trains on lines that don't have TGVs.
Corail Teoz go at up to 125 mph and have refitted, modernised carriages. They have compulsory seat reservations: if you have a ticket for one of these trains, you will have a numbered seat.
Local trains in France are normally described as TER.

Confirming that there is NO TGV from Paris to Brive. They are not regional (TER) trains either, just normal, quite fast trains.

It is 4 hours from Paris to Brive, and I have usually done it 2nd class, once first class, and the first wasn't worth it.

Also confirm that when you book your ticket you will also book a seat, and so there is no need (as there once was) to have a separate reservation)

Another suggestion is to bring a sandwich with you if you are going to be travelling over lunch. The sandwich stands at Austerlitz station are pretty good, and cheaper than what you can buy on the train from the trolley, which sometimes takes forever to get to where you are sitting.

On a Téoz, the difference for 1st class doesn't really warrant the fare difference.

I also recommend bringing your picnic supplies on the train. It is a French tradition.
