Train from Oslo to Bergen

We will be taking the train from Oslo to Bergen and overnighting that evening in Bergen. Not sure if we should do the Norway in a Nutshell tour as we have to leave Bergen the next day at 2:00. We are worried we might not have enough time to enjoy Bergen. Appreciate all input!

I did not visit Bergen while in Norway, but I can tell you the Nutshell tour was the highlight of my trip. I went back to Oslo instead of continuing on to Bergen, and while I wish I'd spent time there, I would never trade the Nutshell to see it. I believe you get into Bergen around 7pm or something, so you would at least have a half day to spend in Bergen. You would have to weigh your preference of seeing another city versus seeing the fjords. For me, the fjords were so unique and stunning, I couldn't pass them up.

Bergen is OK but nothing to take a several hour train trip to get to but the Norway in a Nutshell thing is EXTRAORDINARY - You could do it on the way to Bergen if you leave early and OK with getting to Bergen late - a half day the next day should be enough to see the waterfront's old wooden buildings. for lots on the NIN check www.ricksteves.com; www.budgeteuropetravel.com and https://www.norwaynutshell.com/?gcli...bNkaAlF08P8HAQ

To do it coming fromOslo get off at Myrdhal - take the mountain train down to Flamand the fjord for a 2-hour ride along the fantastic fjord to Gudvagen for a bus to Voss and then train to Bergen- all parts are coordinated and timed - could buy one ticket for all in Oslo I think or Myrdhal.

NIN is wonderful!!! Overnighting would still give you part of that next day to explore Bergen. You won't be able to do everything, but you will be able to see quite a bit. It is very compact, so super easy to just walk everywhere.

Thanks to all for the excellent input! Very helpful!

You could also do the NIN as a long day trip from Oslo I think.

Yes, that is what we did, the NIN in one day. Long day,but so worth it and then we had more time in Bergen.

NiN is a self guided tour on public transport. You can save a bit buying the train ticket Oslo to Myrdal 90 days in advance (best to buy Oslo - Flåm for convenience) and the ferry ticket. The rest can be paid as you go.

I liked the Nutshell but Bergen was a disappointment. I would do the Nutshell.

dyoll as usual has excellent advice. I don't understand why anyone would be disappointed in Bergen. It's a lovely place with an interesting history as well as scenic beauty. As dyoll stated, you can do the same NiN trip on your own and save money by purchasing advance train tickets.
