Train from Moscow to St. Petersburg
I'm thinking of visiting Russia this winter. I wanted to see Moscow for a few days, then head to St. Petersburg. As far as the train tickets, are there any other locations (besides the train station) that sell them at decent prices? I was looking online and one website said that different locations in Moscow sell the tickets at different rates? Any input and/or suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks!

I've bought train tickets several times over the years, last visit I bought them from Amex travel office in Moscow. Moscow Times travel section has more suggestions on local travel agents who can book rail.

thanks Odin - which train did you take? I am interested in something that is overnight and high on luxury. The russian train sites I have visited on the internet seem to indicate that the grand express is the nicest train, with the red arrow as second place. Have you taken either? thanks for your help!

The only one I remember the name of is the Nikolaevsky Express. I chose that one because of the retro design of the train, it was recommended by Amex, we took 1st class compartment for 2 persons.
The Grand De Lux is the most luxurious of them all. Red Arrow is a famous train and has alot of choices of compartments. If you check out expresstorussia.com, they give you some more info on the trains.

"Train from Moscow to Leningrad" makes me so nostalgic; it was one of the highlights of my trip to Russia--in 1984! If you want to read about the difference on the train then, go to the 11th post of this thread:

I bought my ticket in the lobby of my hotel 48 hours before I wanted to travel. Easy peasy and I calculate just 200 roubles over the odds. I bought the return from St P to Moscow at the city centre booking office in St P which took ages and ages!
Apart from one daytime train St P to Moscow on Mon and Friday (assume there must be something similar going the other way), all the trains run overnight departing sometime between 2230 and 0130 or thereabouts. The higher the train number the better the train.
You can check for yourself at:

I travelled on train #5 kupé class and it was super new and very nice. I am wondering exactly what it is that you get extra on the "luxury" trains - like the only thing that could improve the experience that I can think of is more toilets.
Do the "special" trains have more loos?
Just curious.

i too am going to take an overnight train from moscow to st petes, spend a day in st petersburg and then take the train back to moscow that next night. (saving on hotel bills!)
i was going to book first class on a moderately priced train and hope that no one will be booked in my 2 bunk room....what are the chances?

If you book a double compartment for your sole use, you will have it for yourself. If you only book one of the bunks, you will be sharing with someone. If it's not busy then you might get it to yourself but unlikely.

Maltesa - a first class ticket from Moscow to St Petersburg won't be much less than a perfectly acceptable hotel room.
Are you going just to save hotel costs, or because you want to see St P? If the latter then there is very little point going for one day.
