train from Milan to Sorrento
Hi, Can anyone help with advice on the best route to get from Milan to Sorrento (then Positano). We only have a few days. Thinking of getting the FS train to Naples then either the Cs to Sorrento (staying overnight) followed by the SITA bus to Positano first thing next morning. OR FS train to Naples (staying overnight Naples) then the ferry to Sorrento and bus to Positano. Ferry sounds great but we don't have any idea of timetables, cost, travel time etc. or even the name of it to try to find info on the web. Have enjoyed some great tips from this site so hope to hear some more. Any budget hotels in Naples or Sorrento and even Positano would also be great. Two 50 year-youngs!!!

Are you sure you may reach Sorrento from Naples using the Cs trains?

IMO, your best bet may be taking the FS train from Milan to Salerno. Once there you decide whether to stay for the night or to continue on a ferry/hydrofoil to Positano right away.

There's an 8:00am train out of Milan that arrives in Salerno at 3:55pm (not on Saturdays; change in Naples). The 9:00am train out of Naples arrives in Salerno at 4:17pm (change in Rome).

From Salerno, there appear to be hydrofoils leaving for Positano at 8:15am, 11:05am and 5:05pm (if you're lucky you may catch this last one ...)
There are also ferries from Salerno to Positano that leave at roughly at every hour, the last ones at 5:15pm and 6:30pm (if you're not able to get the hydrofoil you may stick to the ferry).

In any event, there's some info regarding boats on
http://www.starnet.it/onda_verde/orari_traghetti.htm

Some bus info may be looked at
http://www.starnet.it/onda_verde/trasporti_frame.htm
and http://www.starnet.it/onda_verde/sita.htm

Paulo

Hi Paulo: You're not often wrong but I'm afraid you got to put this one in the negative column). The Cs (Circumvesuviana) runs every half-hour from below the Naples train station to Sorrento (~1hr). The Sorrento Cs train is also the one you take to Pompeii. (guidebook info)> And from the Sorrento Cs station you can catch a SITA bus (~every hr) to Positano (35min). Regards, Walter

Ooops ... you're right, Walter I always had a car when I was in those parts (I have a cousin in Naples and another one in Salerno ... both of which have a boat ... a piece of cake and I thought that the Cs trains to Pompei went through Torre Annunziata

This really means that the quickest (and cheapest) way for Marilyn to reach Positano is indeed to take the bus from Sorrento.

The Cs departure schedules may be found at
http://www.virtualtorre.com/servizi/circum/circum.htm

and the bus schedules from Sorrento at
http://www.starnet.it/onda_verde/trasporti_frame.htm

Most hydrofoils from Naples to Positano leave at the Margellina port (taxi from the train station), and the journey costs Lit 30,000 taking about 45 min. Relevant departures appear to be at 4:20pm and 6:20pm.
http://www.starnet.it/onda_verde/orari_traghetti.htm

Paulo
