Train from London to York

We have been to England twice, but this is the first time we want to take a train anywhere, so I need a little help. We want to travel from London to York roundtrip. We think we catch the train at Kings Cross. Is this correct? Do I need to buy tickets in advance? Do I need to make advance reservations? If so, where do I look on the web or whom do I call? Or, do we just show up at the station (which station?)? What is the least expensive way to do this? We will be there mid-June.

Thanks for the help!

Do not just turn up and go. It will be horrifically expensive.
Instead, go to www.thetrainline.com and book ahead. You can also do this once you arrive in Britain by going to the railway station or phoning them on 08457 222333. But you might find that if you are only in the U K for a few days before you make the trip you won't qualify for the cheapest tickets.
If you are travelling on Friday then it will be more expensive, regardless of your ticket type.
It should take about 2 hours or less. The trains go from Kings Cross.

Several years ago I was in London and we took the train from Kings Cross to York. My travel agent arranged for the ticket before we left US, which I advise.
Kings Crossing was big but easy to navigate train station. Trip to York took about 2 hours with pretty countryside. Train Station in York is delightful with 1 or 2 hotels within walking distance. The town of York is a walled city and only a few blocks from the train station. Check out the "Shambles" shopping area. Have a great Scandanavian museum--small but informative--took abaout 1 hour to go thru. Betty's Tea Room/Shoppe was a treat for lunch and connected to a chocolate chop. Read tour book on York so you don't miss anything. Also suggest you look into train to Windsor. Can be done in one day and so, so worth it.

Hi Shelley, under the search here in Fodors try Traintrip,Edinburgh to York to London it will bring up a very informative Thread and has a list of the many train sites to research. try www.railtrack.co.uk for a start. Also from another post a phone number in the UK 011 44 345 484950 for checking rate from the USA .You can also search under Britrail for some opinions on that. J

Hi, Shelley!
I don't know if you are interested but, I booked a local guide for the day when I escorted 7 of my clients to England. She was just terrific. We walked the wall of York, had lunch at Betty's, etc, all accompanied by this lovely woman. She was full of information and anecdotes! If you would like her name, I should be very pleased to pass it on. Just email me. I will have to look through my England file, but, would be happy to send it on to you.
Cheers,
Gloria

Thanks to everyone for the information. I think I know how to proceed now.

Gloria, I will be emailing you to get the name of the tour guide. That sounds wonderful! Thank you.

I know you didn't ask for things to do while in York, and maybe your itinerary is already closed, but in case... My favorite thing to do in York is to visit the Castle Museum. It's a wonderful look at British life for the last century or so. This is one of my favorite (non-art) museums in the world, actually. Highly recommend you plan on spending a few hours there.

Check out Hull Trains. This company run from Kings Cross to Hull.
If you get of at Selby, 30 minutes from York you can travel on by trian or bus.
Although not as convenient the saving in cost can be something like 70% or it was last time I used it. Also at the moment GNER another trian company have an offer which is a very much reduced fair worth checking. Good Luck
