I have. What kind of comments do you need? Three daily trains, two Russian and one Finnish. You can book tickets to all three from Finnish Rail (www.vr.fi). Takes a little over 5 hours (sometimes 6), border control in train.

In case you wonder about alternatives, we hired a driver that drove us from St. Pete to Helsinki, door to door for about $150. The driver could not had been more courteous, assist us during the border crossing, and the car (Mercedes Benz) was plenty comfortable. I have the info in case you are interested.

Can food be purchased on board or is it better to take a snack with us? Are there stops along the way? What is the scenery like? Thanks.

Second class is just fine. There is a luggage coach. There is also a restaurant coach, but like always in anything that moves, it is not cheap. And then there is a person that walks around and sells snacks, drinks, newspapers and so on.

The only stop is at the border when the boarder guards come in. The scenery? Mostly forest. Trees and more trees. Railways are cut like that so they donīt disturb peopleīs homes.

The scenery is a whole lot of not much - pretty flat and a lot of scrub oak. If you take the Russian train take your own food on with you - you definitely won;t want to eat theirs. Don;t know about food on the Finnish train.

IMHO - take a good book and plan on a nap.

Can these tickets be purchased on the internet in advance?? I have not found any such site yet and I am planning a Helsinki-St Petersburg-Riga train trip for August. I don't like to wait until the last minute to make travel arrangements!
Thanks.

linet--- back from travel!! I was on vacation and came back to find your message...was so deseperate to leave this freezing weather that left without checking back the forum that Thursday!

This is what we did: We contacted the Radisson Hotel in advance who referred us to driving services out of St. Pete. Their drivers travel back and forth that route almost every day. This is their contact information:

POC: Irina

Driving Services located at:

35, 2 nd Line, Vasilievsky Island,
199004, Saint-Petersburg
Russia
Tel.: +7 812 327 72 56
Fax.: +7 812 327 74 29
Mobile + 7 812 934 95 09
E-mail: [email protected]

They were very responsive, courteous, puntual; can't say enough good things about this driving service.

The drive route is a bit dull, specifically once in Finland. All in one it was extremely convenient. Hope this helps.
