Train from Glasgow Scotland to Whitby England

In September my sister and I will tour Scotland for 6 nights and then take a train from Glasgow to Whitby England. 3 days later need a train from Whitby to London to fly home. What trains are best to schedule from these two places and how do I go about it?

Use this to find and buy Advance tickets - buy about 12 weeks out for cheapest fares

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

Glasgow to Whitby from about £15
Whitby to London from about £17

Both journeys will involve a couple of changes

For Whitby to London it's better to take a bus to Scarborough or coach to York as by train you have to back track to Middlesbrough.

Discounted tickets are sold in limited numbers and can't be changed nor refunded for the deepest discounts (I believe correct me if not so) so buy ASAP - can sell out weeks early and be sure of your times as they are valid only on the one specific train you book them for.

And yes try to visit York too en route - put bags in a station locker and head for the Minster (famous cathedral) and town center not far away - York to me along with Bath is England's finest cities I've been too, from a visual aspect.

For lots on trains in general hit www.seat61.com - goo dinfo from a Brit on discounted tickets; and for general info (first class IME is MUCh nicer than standard class, especially for those with lots of luggage) check www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com. And don't even think of any railpass - not nearly traveling enough even at full fare.

<<Discounted tickets are sold in limited numbers and can't be changed nor refunded... correct me if not so>>

"Advance fares are valid only on the date and train shown on the ticket and are non-refundable. You CAN change the time or date of travel before departure... Any difference in fare and an administration fee will be payable."

Thanks sofarsosogood! If you do need to change do so quickly before the lowest fare becomes much higher often I would think - well can easily see the next highest fare on www.nationalrail.co.uk.

Thank you everyone. I'm looking at nationalrail.com. This is the schedule I'm looking at from Glasgow to Whitby:

Leave 13:00 from Glasgow Central to Darlington. Then 20 minutes later depart Darlington to Middlesbrough. Then 40 minutes later from Middlesbrough to Whitby. Arriving at 19:07. Should I have any concerns with this route? And why does it say above it "this train is overtaken by a train that departs later" ????? Sounds alarming!

The message just means another train leaves later and arrives earlier. So check out that option. Probably fewer changes.

Three nights in Whitby strikes me as a long time. I would spend a night in York on your way to London.

use the link I provided unless you'd like to pay an addition booking fee
