Train from Geneva to Chamonix

Hi Travelers,
I am traveling to Chamonix, Fr next fall and was wondering the best way to get to Chamonix from the Geneva, Ch airport?? I will be getting into Geneva at 1255 and did not see too many choices for Rail Europe. Are there any regional trains I should look at? thank you.

I can only tell you by train you can leave at least hourly from the airport by train and be in Chamonix in 3 or 3.5 hours about - there are inevitably a few changes of train but only in small stations where it will not be a hassle.
You can or should also investigate shuttle bus transfers from Geneva Aeroport to Chamonix - in ski season at least there are quite a few i believe - quicker by a lot.

For trains schedules i use the German Rail Web site which has schedules for trains all over Europe and is relatively easy to use - schedules will not be loaded for next fall but these train links rarely change much except for from weekdays (Mon-Sat) and Sundays so just put any date in to get a general idea of the rail link.

If you can wait until 15h45, there is a bus at the airport that goes to Chaminix: http://world.chamonix.com/PDF/geneveautomne.pdf.

I think this is your best bet as the regional trains leave from Genève Eaux-Vives (in the city) at 5 pm

Thank you Palenque,
I was reading earlier posts about transportation and it looks like the bus line is a good option. I will check the train site as an alternative.

thank you parisian. that time frame is very do...able!!

parisian - you need not go to Eaux Vives on some rail links - the bahn.de site also has routings from Cornavin, Geneva's main station to Bellegarde where you change for trains to St-Gervais-les-Bains, from where the narrow-gauge mountain train begins and rolls to Chamonix. Having not to transfer to the remote Eaux Vives station is a plus so check the bahn.de site if going by train for links not involving taking a tram from Cornavin to Eaux Vives - or a taxi of course.

another novel route listed on bahn.de that takes 3.75 hours from the airport to Chamonix by train actually goes from Geneva Airport direct to Martigny - from where you hop one of Europe's most thrilling mountain climbing trains up and over the Alps to Chamonix. The route goes first along Lake Geneva then up the sweet Rhone Valley to Martigny, from where a narrow-gauge train starts a precipitous climb along a ledge out of the Rhone Valley.

First of all, for train connectionsm, use
http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm
Swiss Federal Railway site, reliable and easy to use.

Also forget train routes via Bellegarde and via Martigny (unless you have lots of time to kill). Too complicated. The online timetable searches might give those absurd connections (not with above sbb site). The quickest train route should be via Gare de Eaux-Vives but the inconvenience is Cornavin (main city center station) and E.V. are not connected and you need to use a tram or a taxi for this. + after E.V.You still need to change twice or at least once at Le Fayet. It would take more than 3 hours from the Airport. The regular coach line is the quickest and the simplest.

www.ChamExpress.com, cannot comment. I live in Geneva but have never heard of it, so never used it. Might be a good option.

bahn.de shows either via Bellegarde or Eaux-Vivies train travel time is about the same - that said then i'd rather hop a train right from Geneva Cornavin to Bellegarde then switch as opposed to taking a tram or taxi clear across town to Eaux Vives station, from where you still may have to change at Bellegarde
