Train from Gatwick to Edinburgh

Arriving at Gatwick at 8 AM on a Wednesday. What is the best/easiest way to travel by train to Edinburgh. Is it necessary to go into and then out of London or is it possible to bypass London? (We are two adults who have learned to pack light, so we will not be loaded down with luggage, but I'm sure we will be tired.) Thanks so much for your help.

Hi, Betty Ann,
It may be possible with some weird routing like via Oxford or Reading, but it probably would take forever, compounding your fatigue. Better I think to take the express train to Victoria, taxi or tube to Kings Cross, onward to Edinburgh. Fast, fast.

FYI, though, there are lots of cheap air possibilities these days for intra-Britain travel; combined with the surface transport cost from LGW to and across London, and the time, you might consider flying instead. Watch out for carriers operating out of Luton or Stanstead airports, your fatigue would be cosmic in those cases.

I would suggest a slight modification to John's answer. Take the Thameslink train to Kings Cross Thameslink, walk about 200 metres to Kings Cross mainline station to catch the train to Edinburgh, thus avoiding the tube or taxi across central London from Victoria.

Definitely fly. Lowcost. Quick change of terminal. Saving on hours of stress and travel. Checkout Go; buzz; ryanair; They all have websites

Sheila, I checked out your suggested airlines. Ryanair's only service between England and Scotland is London Stansted(STN) to Prestwick (PIK). Buzz only flies from London to the continent. Go does fly from STN to EDI. I am not sure that I would characterize a 2 hr+, 60 mile journey costing a minimum of 25 GBP between LGA and STN as a "Quick change of terminal"! Unless you have other suggestions, rail still looks better to me.

Ron

pardon me, LGW; LGA is LaGuardia which is an even tougher connect!

Thank you everyone for your help. I think we will take the Thameslink train.

Sheila - Thanks so much for your e-mail. Looking forward to more info from you.
