Train from Frankfurt to Amsterdam then back from Amsterdam to Schweinfurt

April 11 we land in Frankfurt at 5:45am. We then want to take a train to Amsterdam. April 16 we want to take a train from Amsterdam to Schweinfurt.

I have been looking at the German train website: www.bahn.de
and the Netherlands train website: www.ns.nl

I cannot get the Netherlands website to go to English.

The German website lets me book roundtrip Frankfurt - Amsterdam for about 90 euro apiece.

If I buy tickets in advance, I worry about the flight coming in late. Is it possible to buy tickets at the station after we get to Frankfurt? Do trains sell out?

Do we have to go from the airport to somewhere else in Frankfurt to catch the train?

Coming back, should we buy round trip tickets to Frankfurt and then buy another ticket to Schweinfurt?

I'd really appreciate any help.

You shouldn't have to go into Frankfurt itself (vs,leaving from the airport station) for a train to Amsterdam.

There are several direct timings throughout the day although others may require changes in Cologne or Mainz or Dusseldorf.

Although you can route yourself back through Frankfurt to Schweinfurt you don't necessarily have to do so. There are timings requiring changes in other places such as Wurzburg.

Do trains sell out? Yes, sometimes and I understand your concern about getting a train ticket and then missing the train. For ICEs you do not necessarily have to have a seat reservation but if the one you are on is crowded you may wish you had one.

Hope this helps a little and am sure others will add info.

Of course. Factor in about 15-20 min for the ticket counter.

>Do trains sell out?

No. The tickets are sold indefinitely. It might happen that all seats are occupied and you have to stand or sit on your luggage. To prevent this, I recommend to reserve seats in advance (it is possible at www.bahn.de and costs 3 Euro per person). If the flight is late you lose 3 Euro.
Btw. if you buy a ticket in advance, you don't need to worry about late flight as well - you just take the next train.

>Do we have to go from the airport to somewhere else in Frankfurt to catch the train?

No, Frankfurt Airport Fernbahnhof (AiRail Terminal) is a major rail hub in itself.

>Coming back, should we buy round trip tickets to Frankfurt and then buy another ticket to Schweinfurt?

No, just buy a single ticket from Amsterdam to Schweinfurt (e.g. together with your ticket Frankfurt to Amsterdam). Dukey explained why. Although all trains to Schweinfurt will pass Frankfurt too.

Dukey,

>Yes, sometimes and I understand your concern about getting a train ticket and then missing the train.

You only have to worry about this if you have bought a discounted ticket (SparPreis) - those are only valid on a specified train connection. Normal train tickets are valid 48 h (for inland tickets) or 2 months (for international connections).

I still understand the concern about missing the train especially if you DON'T KNOW what Altamiro (thank you very much for doing so) just explained!

Thank you very much to both of you! People on Fodors are great.

I wondered if maybe trains didn't sell out, only seats. It's going to be interesting doing this jetlagged. Oh well, I like adventure.
