Train from Florence to Rome
 

Hello,

I wanted to travel by train from Florence to Rome. I was looking on the Italia Rail website to purchase, and I was wondering if there's a way to get to the Roma S Pietro station? Or does it only go to Roma Termini? (hotel I'm staying at is right next to that station)

Also, in Florence, is it the Stazione Santa Maria Novella?

Any advice would be appreciated, thank you.

No, Roma S. Pietro is a train station. The fast train to Florence departs from Roma Termini station. There is no metro near Roma S. Pietro. You would have to take a bus or train to Termini. It would be a local train for a couple of euro. You do not want to buy in advance.

Trenitalia is the Italian rail company and Italiarail is a reseller which charges a fee. You can book directly with Trenitalia without the fee and extra ticket restrictions.

I assume you meant you were staying near S. Pietro and wanted to get to Termini? The trains to Florence would be leaving from Termini.

Pietro to Termini by train is 1€ and takes 20-25 minutes. You can see on this line map of local trains and metro, the line FL5 (also called FR5)from Civtavecchia to Termini stops at S. Pietro. There are at least two trains per hour (more during rush hour).

ky - the OP is going from florence TO Rome I think.

therefore, Will, once you get to Termini, [which is where the main-line trains from Florence stop] you'll need to get another train to Roma San Pietro. there are two direct ones an hour, and a couple or so which require a change at Roma Ostiense, but I don't think I'd bother with them, as we connected through Ostiense on our way back from Ostia Antica and it's quite a big and confusing station, full of commuters.

we stayed in a hotel near Roma S. Pietro for a week in February - care to tell us where you are staying? I might have a few tips!

It could be best to get off at Rome Tiburtina station and take regional trains from there to Ostiense and direct perhaps to S Pietro - Termini is a dead-end station so it could save time if trains run as I suspect they may.

The #64 bus stops at the San Pietro station, too. FYI.

That adds an extra change that isn't necessary. There isn't a direct train from Tiburtina like there is from Termini. If you got off at Tiburtina you would have to catch the FR1 and change at either Tuscolana, Ostiense or Trastevere to the FR5.

Thanks for your responses. I'm coming FROM Florence, going TO the area near the Vatican, stopping at Termini. I thought there might be a quick train I could hop on to. So barring the bus, it looks like the FL5 is the way to go?

Validate your ticket for the FR5 before boarding.

Not to confuse the matter, but last year we were in Florence going to Rome; I bought tickets via Trinitalia (from the US) for the trip, but didn't see that I had purchased tickets from Campo di Marte Station rather than SMN. I fretted about the "error" and decided to go with the flow and found that this smaller station is apparently one that many Florentines use to get to Rome. Blind luck, I am sure.
