Train from Florence to Positano
 

We will be traveling from Florence to Positano and would like to take a train instead of renting a car. What would be the easiest way to get to Positano? Someone mentioned to me to arrive in Sorrento, then take a bus to Positano, but after checking on trenitalia.com, I didn't see a station in SOrrento, just Naples. Does any Fodorites have any suggestions for me??

The train that goes to Sorrento is called the Circumvesuviana:

You take the regular train to Naples and then walk downstairs to get the circumvesuviana. You can buy your ticket on the platform. It's an hour from Naples to Sorrento.

Once in Sorrento exit the train station and walk to the nearest bar (look on your left when you get to the street). Buy your tickets there. The bus will be located in front of the train station, just off the road.

Sit on the right side (front seat, if possible) for the best views. The next best views are front seat on the left side.

jend -- you can also take the train to Salerno and then the SITA bus to Positano. Not as crowded, sit on the left side, or weaather permitting take a boat.

I agree--the route thru Salerno is easier to Positano. You have 3 choices from Salerno--boat, SITA bus, or have your hotel send a car.

Be aware that the SITA bus from Salerno to Positano requires a change in Amalfi. It's 75 minutes to Amalfi, and another 45 minutes from Amalfi to Positano (total two hours travel time, plus time to connect).

There is also a ferry boat from Salerno to Positano which stops very briefly at Amalfi, but is faster (by one hour) than taking the bus.

The SITA bus departs hourly from directly outside of the Salerno train station (tickets at the newstand inside the station).

Sorrento to Positano to Amalfi and reverse
Amalfi to Salerno and reverse
Naples to Amalfi (direct) and reverse
Amalfi to Ravello and reverse

Thanks for your suggestions - I thinkt he Solerno route sounds most attractive. Is it easy to get on the ferry from the train station?

As you exit the train station in Salerno keep going in the direction you are facing (SW)on Via C. Mauro. You will come to a large cross street (Corso Garibaldi). Continue on to the nextlarge cross street (Lungomare Trieste). The docks are across the street at Pzza della Concordia.
