Train from Edinburgh to Inverness

we are flying into Edinburgh in May and need to take the train from Edinburgh to Inverness (and back just over a week later).
Any suggestions? I’m not sure if the info I’ve seen online is up to date. One site said you have to change trains, others say you don’t. Also that there are a couple of different routes. I’d like as short a trip as possible.

Take the tram or Airlink bus from EDI to Haymarket Station (a bit nearer to the airport) or to Waverley Station (the station in central Edinburgh). Half of the trains to Inverness are direct with no changes and about half change at Perth - but you'd know which were which before you book so can easily avoid the connecting trains.

Using Haymarket would be 8-10 minutes faster.

Not sure where you are looking, but this is THE site for train travel, in the UK and elsewhere. This is for the UK:

Thank you. These answers are both very helpful. I have done so little travel in the past 15 years that it's all new to me.

See also www.nationalrail.co.uk

It's run by the train operating companies and takes you through to the appropriate company's booking system - cuts out the middleman.
