Train from Croatia to Hungary

I'm planning on taking a train from Zagreb to Budapest. I can find the schedule information online but I cannot book tickets. Does anyone know where I can book tickets?

I will only be getting to Zagreb a couple of hours before the train and I'm nervous that the train may be full if I wait to buy there.

I bought my ticket at the train station in Zagreb. The train was crowded, but it was a Sunday in July. You might see if seat61.com has a link that will help. How are you getting to Zagreb? Can you buy the ticket at an earlier stop?

The train I took was slow and hot, opt for the fastest on the schedule and take water (and food).

The trip from Zagreb to Budapest (and back) takes about five hours by train. This isn't for everyone, but there was a super early train leaving from Glavni Kolodvor in Zagreb at around 4 or 5 in the morning when I made the trip. It was not so crowded and not so hot.

I'm sure the schedule has probably changed, but I recommend the really early trains. My Croatian friends have told me that a lot of the overnight trains actually take much longer than others. Who needs a five-hour trip to take seven hours, right?

We took the train from Zagreb to Budapest on Thursday, Sept 27th leaving at 4pm and arrived in Budapest at 930pm. Going 1st class we 4 had a compartment to ourselves and slept part of the time. We got our tickets online and did not have to stand in any lines in the station. We ordered them from RailEurope.( we took food and wine on board and entertained ourselves.)
