Train from Bregenz, Austria to Piazza di Spagna Station in Rome
 

Short notice trip with 5 of my friends. Need advice on best and/or economical way to travel from Bregenz, Austria to Piazza di Spagna Station in Rome. Travel date in 7-10 days and not one of us have ever tried travelling via train but are open to do so. It would be great if you can share indicative costs per person. Thanks

1. Book the Munich to Rome CNL sleeper, www.bahn.de/en

2. Book a train from Bregenz to Munich at www.bahn.de/en - I'd allow at least 1 hour between trains to connect, just in case of delay.

OR by day:

1. Book Munich to Rome www.bahn.de/en

2. Book Bregenz to Munich to connect, with an hour between trains.

You can do this in one long day - with lovely scenery through the Brenner Pass in the Alps. Or do one leg in an afternoon, stay in Munich, next leg next day. Your call what you do!

Fares work like air fares, cheap if booked 3 months in advance, expensive if booked just days in advance.

Discount tickets come in first class too and if doing a long day train you may find the more relaxed roomy seats a plus- cheapest is not always the best so check out fares in both classes.

Man in Seat 61 posted here once that he was 'an aficionado of first class' himself. For lots of good info on trains in general and the difference in classes check out not only Man's commercial site www.seat61.com but also these informative sites - www.ricksteves.com and www.budgeteuropetravel.com.

If traveling within a week you may find cheap fares gone - you may consider flying too if not wanting to do the overnight train or a long long daytime trip.

I don't see any reason for going back to Munich fromBregenz - it is qicker to go over to Innsbruck via Feldkirch and connect with trains to Verona and on into Italy.

It is at least 7 hours to Vernona from Bregenz (more if going via Munich) and then probably another 5-6 hours to Rome - consider the overnight train or flying!

via Zurich takes an hour longer I believe after looking at www.bahn.de/en - if going the whole marathon day's journey you will not have time to linger anywhere but an overnight in SDwitzerland would be sweet - beautiful Lucerne perhaps.

Actually the quickest way at about 9.5 hours Bregenz to Rome seems to go via Switzerland - St Gallen - Chur - Bellinzona by a really scenic bus up and over the San Bernardino Pass (if I recall correctly) to Bellinzona and by train with two more changes to Rome.

Leave Bregenz 7:15 am arrive in Rome before 5 pm.

That train too goes via Innsbruck, right - but maybe the rationale for going up to Munich is it comes thru Innsbruck rather late?

If you are ready to pay more, you leave Bregenz at 10.55 and change at Bellinzona from bus to train (distance 300 metres):

The Munich-Rome overnight train leaves Innsbruck at about 11 pm so not so bad - bop around Innsbruck during the day - linger over a late dinner and hop on the night train - less travel and maybe cheaper than backtracking to Munich.

jrodion wants to go from BREGENZ to Rome, NOT from MUNICH. If he wants to take the overnight train, he will leave Bregenz at 19.40, change at Feldkirch and arrive at Innsbruck at 22.16. Fourty minutes later, he will board the overnight train and arrive at Roma Termini the next morning at 9.22.
Munich has nothing to do with this itinerary.
The best fare (Sparnight) for this solution is 69 EUR for a seat, 89 EUR for a cuccetta and 109 EUR for a berth; the standard fare is 172 EUR for a seat and 212 EUR for a berth.

Man 61 - www.bahn.de at times comes up with these mistakes - Munich is not the best connecting point for that night train - Innsbruck is.

But checking on www.bahn.de/en it also gives going from Bregenz via Feldkirche and Innsbruck for that night train best connection - Man where do you get the via Munich is best from bahn.de?

It took me all this time to thank everyone for your input. Our hosts took us to Pitztal so we ended up taking the sleeper train from Innsbruck. I must say it wasn't the most exciting ride. Nevertheless, it took us to our destination.

Night trains are not for everyone but in any case they are a memorable experience! But the do save daytime travel time. What kind of accommodations on the night train did you have - private compartment or couchette? Curious.
