Train from Assisi to Gubbio?
Has anyone taken a train to Gubbio from Assisi? We will be staying in Assisi and would love to do a day trip to Gubbio. Is this a relatively easy thing to do from Assisi? Can we just buy train tix at Assisi train station the morning of our travel? Do you take a taxi from Gubbio train station to the center of town, or is there a bus? Thanx for any info.

Hello Laura,

Gubbio station (Fossato di Vico/Gubbio) is on the Foligno-Ancona line and is 11 miles from Gubbio. There is a connecting bus service from the station to Gubbio.

You can get tickets on the day.

You will have to change train at Foligno.

You can find train timetables on
www.trenitalia.it

Hope this helps ...

Steve

P.S. Assisi station is 15 mins. from Assisi - there is a connecting bus service.

P.S. Forgot to say - you can also get there by bus from PERUGIA.

Steve, would it be better to take train from Assisi to Perugia, then bus to Gubbio? (Trying to figure out *easiest way to do it.)

Thank you for your help.
|
Laura - I think via Perugia's easier and probably quicker. That's the way I did it.
The Perugia-Gubbio bus timetable is on www.apmperugia.it. Here's the link:

http://www.apmperugia.it/orari_tariffe/orari_extraurbani.asp

It shows buses at 9.45 and 11.05 (Mon-Sat) from Piazza Partigiani, Perugia.

If I remember, there's a connecting bus from Perugia station to Piazza Partigiani.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

If you look carefully at the bus schedules, you'll find a morning bus at 7:00 from Assisi to Perugia Piazza Partigiani which immediately connects to a second bus direct to Gubbio, arriving there approx. 9:00 a.m. This is much preferable to taking the train, or even a combination of train and bus. The connection times on the return trip are not quite as convenient, but there are about 10 daily buses between Gubbio and Perugia.

In case you want to look up the bus schedules yourself, go to
www.apmperugia.it
Click on "Orari Extraurbani"
Assisi to Perugia is Line E007
The bus leaves Assisi Piazza Matteotti at 6:55 and Piazza Unita' d'Italia (much closer to Basilica of St. Francis) at 7:01, arriving in Perugia Piazza Partigiani at 7:45.
The connecting bus to Gubbio (Line E001) leaves at 7:50 and arrives at 9:00. You can also look up fares (they are quite reasonable: approx. 6 Euros from Assisi to Gubbio).

The two buses are operated by the same company, but I'm not completely sure whether they will guarantee the connection (I suspect they will).

I just ck'd train schedules, and they have an 8:21 train from Assisi to Foligno, arriving at 8:35; then an ES train from Foligno at 9:08, arriving Gubbio at 9:37. (About an hr in travel each way) Sounds good, no?
|
Laura - Outward that looks your best option unless you want to travel earlier as Gac suggested.

You will still have a bus journey (35-mins) from Gubbio station (Fossato di Vico) to Gubbio itself.
The connecting bus leaves at 09.50, arriving at Gubbio at 10.25.

The full Fossato di Vico - Gubbio bus timetable is on the link I gave you:
http://www.apmperugia.it/orari_tariffe/orari_extraurbani.asp

Time-wise I think it doesn't make much difference whether you go that route or via Perugia (- though you will pay a Eurostar premium/seat reservation charge).

Either way it's about 2 hours altogether. You could go that way and maybe come back the other ...

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Steve, for just a day trip from Assisi, it sounds much more involved than I'd imagined. It'll be 4 hrs in travel time, alone, then. Is it worth
it? Maybe I should day trip elsewhere from Assisi.....hmmmm....If we were to drive, or be driven, directly to the Gubbio town, how long would *that take?
|
Laura - I had the same dilemma as you (- I also did Gubbio as a day-trip from Assisi).

The way I did it was as a combined trip with Perugia: I spent the morning in Perugia, then caught the bus to Gubbio (70 mins) for the afternoon.

Perugia is well worth half a day - and you don't need more than a few hours to visit Gubbio. Together they make a great day.

Looking at the timetable, there are Perugia-Gubbio buses (Mon-Sat) at:
13.05
13.40*
14.10

* Schools bus - probably best avoided!

Return buses leave Gubbio at:
16.00
18.15

I'd say go for it! Perugia's good for lunch or dinner, so it seems a short journey.

Hope this helps ...

Steve

Laura: a day trip to Gubbio is well worth the time. I'd suggest you go via Perugia (as Steve has stated), and see both towns in one day. I notice from the atmperugia website that the 7:50 a.m. bus from Perugia to Gubbio connects with the incoming bus from Assisi (see footnotes). This likely means that the connection is guaranteed.
