Train from airport into Munich and back?

I would like to return a car (using it to go to Amsterdam and back) at the Munich airport and do a couple of days in the area. Maybe like to see Olympic site, Dachau, the Hoffbrau House and what else around Munich and how? Then I would need to get back to the Munich airport fly out. Thanks for your help.

Munich airport is connected to the city by S-Bahn - those cityrail type local trains. The S1 route will take you into town (Hauptbahnhof/central station) and back in about half an hour.

You can use either the S-1 or the S-8 line to get to downtown.

Excellent! Thank you both so much for your help. I just found out that if I pick up my car downtown I can save 19% tax. Then I can still return it to the airport when we leave, with no penalty. So I think I will do the same thing only in reverse order. Thanks again for your help.

Depending on which S-bahn line you use into town (S-1 or S-8) the time from the airport S-bahn station to the Hauptbahnhof downtown is about 38-40 minutes one way. A single trip ticket from the airport to anywhere in the central zone is €8,80. See www.mvv-muenchen.de for lots of info. There is an English option.

Also visit the Deutsches Museum in Munich.

19% tax
Not a tax, just a rip off.
